DUE to heavy rainfall during the week a lot of matches were called off at the weekend, but those that did take place had plenty of goals to report.

Early Furness Premier League pacesetters Hawcoat Park Reserves hosted Furness Rovers Reserves on a near perfect day for football. The early stages of the first half were evenly matched with both teams trying to dominate the possession with some neat football at times.

The deadlock was broken by the old route one football though as fourth choice Hawcoat keeper Brad McKenna cleared a ball which was missed by the Rovers defence and in stepped Craig Muncaster to finish off nicely for the only goal of the half.

Rovers continued to play better than their league position would suggest and were level within 10 minutes of the restart as Nathan McHugh found the back of the net. The lead was short lived however as Carl MacKay squeezed a shot in from just inside the box. Hawcoat were now in control and further goals from youngsters Ben Stoker and Luke Mitchell made the score 4-1.

Rovers never gave up the fight and a nice move was rounded off by Jamie Edgeley in the last few minutes to make the final score 4-2 to Hawcoat.

Coaching staff from both teams were pleased with how their young charges are progressing. With the Barrow Celtic v Kirkby game falling foul to the weather, Hawcoat Reserves now sit top of the table.

Holker were beaten 6-1 away at league leaders City of Liverpool. Going 2-1 down at half time, Holker were undone by a barrage of late goals. Sam Lightfoot scored for Holker.

In the West Lancs Premier League Vickerstown travelled to Blackpool to play the reigning champions Blackpool Wren Rovers and were defeated 6-1. Danny Cummings levelled the scores midway through the first half but Wrens were clinical on the day and Vickerstown’s cause wasn’t helped when keeper Andy Ireland was sent off for a last ditch tackle.

Crooklands were also on the road and they visited third-placed Fulwood Amateurs where they were beaten 3-1. Dave Mansergh made the score 1-1 after some good pressing work he came away with the ball but still had a bit to do as he rounded the keeper and slotted home.

Fulwood were the better team in the second half and scored two goals against a tiring Cassies. But they can be happy as they performed admirably against one of the league’s top sides. Ross Coulson and Jacob Sweeting were outstanding for Cassies. Louis Jones and Matthew Pearson, both aged 16, played really well in their West Lancs debuts. At the other end of the age scales Lee Andrews made his final appearance for Crooklands before he emigrates to New Zealand. Everybody wishes Lee well.

In the First Division, Hawcoat’s game at Burscough was called off as was the derby between GSK Ulverston and Askam. Dalton United were beaten 4-1 at Wyre Villa, Fraser Shand with the Dalton goal.

Second Division action saw Furness Cavaliers draw 3-3 with Fulwood Amateur Reserves. Ryan Rogers, Sam Graham and Kyle Delves all scored for Cavs who put in a fantastic team performance against a side challenging for the title. Kyle Delves celebrated his 21st birthday by becoming the club’s all time top scorer in West Lancs Football with a brilliant free-kick.

Millom came from 2-0 down to snatch a point at Kendal County, Drew Postlethwaite with both goals, the second coming in the 90th minute.

In the Furness Premier League Bootle beat Walney Reserves 3-0 with goals from Steve Pritt (2) and Joe Capstick. Britannia beat GSK Ulverston Rangers Reserves 6-2. Andy Whiteford (2) Sean Derby, Cameron Clarke, Lee Frith Williams and Paul Dennison all scored for The Brit.

Only one game survived in the First Division, Haverigg Reserves beat Vickerstown A 2-1, Anthony Foster and Luke Chmiel scored for Haverigg. The evergreen Mike Robinson scored for Vickerstown.

In the Second Division the form book was thrown out the window as Coniston Reserves beat Bridge FC 4-0, John Jardine, Andrew Warne and Phil Edmondson (2) weighed in with the goals.

Walney Island A beat Bootle Reserves 3-2 with first team manager and one time Barrow AFC player Steve McCullough taking centre stage with a goal from his first touch and then setting up George Scott with a pinpoint free-kick. Kurt Lord scored the other Walney goal. Oliver Smith and Ike Martin replied for Bootle.
