Yet again the weather played a significant part in the amateur football scene at the weekend, with half the games called off, some as early as Friday afternoon.

Instead of rain, it was mainly frost that did the damage this week, although some games were not called off until the very last minute as teams gave pitches as long as possible to thaw out.

In The Bay West Lancashire League, seven local sides played, with only Askam United coming out with all three points.
The Sandrats easily disposed of a very physical Ladybridge side – who had two players sent off.

Callum Rayner (2), Kyle Jefferson, Kev Edwards and Matthew France scored as the game ended 5-1 to put Askam up to second in the Division Two table.

At Rampside Road, Furness Cavaliers went down by the same score against their bogey side Kendal County. Cavs have now lost all six encounters against them. The visitors opened the scoring, but Kyle Delves equalised for the hosts before Kendal went 2-1 up shortly before half-time.

The score stayed that way until the last 10 minutes when the visitors scored three times to give them a deserved but flattering victory.

Also in Division Two, Barrow Wanderers made the trip to Bolton County and lost 4-2. In Division One, Millom drew 2-2 at Hesketh Bank with goals from Carl Waters and Paul Walker, while all Furness Rovers had to show for their trip to Wyre Villa was a Paul Wrathall goal as they went down 4-1.

Local interest in the Richardson Cup ended as both Vickerstown and Crooklands Casuals fell at the first hurdle.

Vickerstown went out 3-2 on penalties after a 3-3 home draw with Euxton Villa. Goals from Rob Bruce (2) and Carl Pearson looked to have put Dave Round’s side through, but the visitors equalised in the last minute to take the game to spot-kicks.

Crooklands lost 4-0 away to a very impressive Fleetwood Hesketh side.

Holker Old Boys lost at home to Daisy Hill in North West Counties Division One. The visitors were 3-0 up before Phil Coombe pulled a goal back, but it ended 4-1.

The outstanding Paul Wilson Memorial Trophy first round tie between Crooklands Casuals reserves and Barrow Celtic was another game which went to penalties, with Celtic winning 5-4 after it finished 2-2 over 90 minutes.

Paul Southward and Liam Steele scored for Cassies, with Danny Mackay and Gareth Williams netting for Celtic.

Southward was the unfortunate player not to score in the shoot-out.

In the Rifleman’s Garage Furness Premier Division, Millom reserves staged a great comeback to stop Britannia going to the top of the table.

The Brit were 2-0 up at half-time through Danny Keenan and Connor Robinson, but Millom came back to win 3-2 with goals from Chris Wood, Brian Shaw and Andrew Woodburn.

Holker Old Boys reserves could also have gone top with a win, but Furness Rovers reserves beat them 4-2 in an end-to-end game.

Rovers’ scorers were Andrew Oxley (2), Andrew Currie and a Mike Crampton penalty, with Ian Gomersall and Andy Benn on target for Holker.

Walney Island reserves are still unbeaten in Premier Tiles Division One after two goals from goal machine Jordan Brough earned a 2-1 win over Vickerstown A.

Brough has scored hat-tricks for the A-team and first team in previous weeks, but on this occasion two goals were enough to secure the points for the reserves. Mark Treen scored for Vickerstown.

Furness Cavaliers reserves won 5-0 at Millom A in a game that was closer than the scoreline suggests.

Great strikes from Joe Johns and Ben Tiffney put them 2-0 up at half-time and, after Millom missed a penalty early in the second half, Cavaliers scored further goals though Paul Honeyman, Dane Townsend and James Watts.

A second successive hat-trick from Lee Postlethwaite, plus a goal from Adam Banks saw, Haverigg United reserves to a 4-1 win over Askam United A to keep them top of Division Two. Lee Winfield replied for Askam.

Second-placed Britannia reserves slipped up against Walney Island A, going down 2-1 from two headers by James Burns. Ryan Barker scored for the Brit, but also missed a penalty.

Barrow Celtic reserves are still waiting for their first win after losing 6-3 to Barrow Wanderers A. Celtic’s scorers were Gavin Wood (2) and Mark Wallace.
