ZACH Walker had a night to remember in the Terry Clinton Memorial Trophy final – scoring both goals to win the cup for Hawcoat Park as they beat Barrow Celtic 2-1.

The young Hawcoat side, managed by Stu Walker and his assistant Tony Rooney, have had an excellent season and Monday’s victory at Longlands Park was the icing on the cake.

The future certainly looks bright at Hawcoat Park with the likes of Pat Allington and Elliot Moore shining for their first team while Zach Walker, Ryan Magtoto and Brandon Collins are just three of several talented youngsters in the reserves.

On Monday night the reserves had to withstand lots of early pressure from Barrow Celtic who started brightly, with the wind at their backs.

The pitch was in great condition but very hard at this time of year and the sun made it difficult as well.

Celtic missed some good chances, failing to work Ben Mills in the Hawcoat goal and paid the price when Zach Walker broke away to give Hawcoat the lead against the run of play.

Celtic continued to press and finally got their reward when Josh Greenwood equalised, but Walker restored Hawcoat’s lead and they went in 2-1 up at half-time.

In the second half it was far more even and James Sloan made a good save, tipping Carl Mackay’s shot on to the post to keep Celtic in the game.

Celtic gave their all but were unable to create any clear cut chances and there was no further scoring so it was Hawcoat who lifted the trophy, which was presented by Derek Clinton.

Hawcoat’s good week continued on Wednesday as father and son got on the scoresheet against Britannia in a Rifleman’s Garage Premier Division game.

Dad Stuart scored twice with son Zach also netting in the 4-0 win.

Hawcoat stay third as the top two both won as well. Kirkby United won 2-1 at Swarthmoor Social reserves with goals from Paul Cleasby and Mark Jackson while Vickerstown reserves beat Furness Cavaliers reserves 2-1.

Jackson Round and Scott McDonald scored for Vickerstown.

Going into the final week of the season Kirkby are five points ahead of Vickerstown but have played two games more.

The big question will be if playing four games in the last week will prove too much for Vickerstown.

Current form would suggest that Kirkby will win their two remaining games at Cavaliers and Britannia so Vickerstown will probably need to take maximum points from their games.

They face four away games, at Askam United tomorrow, at Holker Old Boys on Monday and the return with Cavaliers on Wednesday before finishing at GSK Ulverston Rangers.

Holker reserves have had a busy week, beating Swarthmoor Social reserves 8-2 on Monday and drawing 1-1 with Furness Rovers reserves on Wednesday with John Paul Stanway scoring four goals over the two games.

Callum Fawcett also scored a hat-trick against Swarthmoor.

The Premier Tiles Division One season finished on Tuesday night as Vickerstown A beat Hawcoat Park A 3-0 with goals from Danny Keenan, 2, and Dan Steele.

The Horne Cup final took place last night at Railway Meadow between Croftlands Park and Crooklands Casuals reserves and there will be a match report in Monday’s Amateur Football round-up.

Cartmel finished runners-up in the North Lancs Premier Division as Carl Airey scored all four goals in a 4-1 win over Trimpell and Bare Rangers.

The West Lancashire League looks like staying with the current format after an inconclusive meeting of all the clubs at Leyland on Tuesday. Clubs based in Lancashire aren’t happy at the prospect of six trips to South Cumbria in Division Two next season and the Premier Division may end up with an extra club as the FA have apparently placed Whitehaven into the league next season, moving them from the Wearside League.

I doubt if that will be the end of the saga and some kind of re-organisation would seem inevitable in the next few years.

Eleven versus eleven football is in decline and most clubs have struggled at some point this season to put out sides. The problem won’t go away and excessive travelling puts demands on players’ time and clubs’ finances.

The West Lancs season finishes tomorrow with Crooklands Casuals at Burnley United and Vickerstown at Southport Hesketh in the Premier Division.

Division One concludes with GSK Ulverston Rangers hosting Ladybridge while in Division Two Millom are at home to Leyland United.
