WALNEY Island boss Steve McCullough is seeking a league double over table-toppers Kendal County at Tummerhill tomorrow.

But the Island manager accepts it could be a bit of a tough ask against a side who have tasted defeat just three times and are four points clear of their closest rivals.

However, McCullough can take heart from the fact that in their West Lancs Division Two meeting in Kendal in September, Walney came home with the goods after sealing a superb 4-2 win thanks to a Danny Turner hat-trick and a Matthew Lockley goal.

Walney’s preparations for the game didn’t go as well as anticipated last week, with the side losing 2-1 at home to Millom after going a goal up through an early Simon Bassett strike – his third in two games.

While the full-back or midfielder is due to face Kendal, there may be no such luck for Turner who is struggling with a dead leg.

“They will be a tough nut to crack,” said a fully focused McCullough. “Saying that, we beat them at their ground 4-2 earlier on this season, so I think they will be after revenge.

“I think we had just come out of four defeats on the spin at the start of the season which set us back a little bit and then we went on a little bit of a run and got a few results and that was one of them.”

He added: “It would be very nice to do the double over them because we have got ourselves in the middle of the pack now.

“It would be nice to get a little run going towards the end of the season to finish off.”

Walney’s match against Millom hung in the balance because of high winds which dominated the clash, McCullough describing it as the proverbial ‘game of two halves’.

“It was played in difficult conditions with the wind, it was a game of two halves – the old cliché – with the wind,” said McCullough.

“We were 1-0 up at half time but we just needed a couple more goals to defend really. It was a bad error for the equalising goal which obviously gave them the impetus to go on and win the game. It was one of those games where we knew it was going to be tough in the second half and didn’t have enough to defend.”

He said of Bassett: “Simon has scored three goals in two games, and I don’t think he has scored three goals in eight years!

“He’s been fantastic, he’s popped up in the right areas and scored which is great for the lad. His dad Steve was a prolific scorer for the Nautical, as it was then.

“But Simon’s a bit more of a defensive player than Steve was. He was an out-and-out striker, but maybe he is getting his eye for goal, you never know.”

Millom, Furness Rovers, Furness Cavaliers and Swarthmoor Social Club are also at home, and will be looking for some positive results tomorrow.

All four local sides in Division One saw their games postponed last week, with the teams keeping their fingers crossed it will be game-on this weekend.

In the Premier Division Crooklands Casuals host lowly Burnley United, with Vickerstown heading to cellar-dwellers Lostock St Gerards.

In the North West Counties League Division One Holker Old Boys extended their unbeaten run with Jordan Brough netting in a 1-0 win over Rochdale Town last week. The seventh-placed side go on the road to Stockport Town tomorrow, a side who produced a resounding 6-0 win over Eccleshall on Tuesday.
