DUE to bad weather last week and the forecast for snow in some parts of Lancashire on Saturday, the West Lancs League committee took the unprecedented step of postponing all fixtures late on Friday evening.

Some clubs reported that their grounds were more than playable, but with concerns about teams travelling in harsh conditions, the call was made.

More heavy rain and hail overnight on Friday put paid to all but one local fixture, and those who braved the cold and watched the Walney Island reserves versus Britannia fixture at the ever-dependable Tummerhill were served up an exciting game with eight goals to keep everyone warm.

In the proverbial game of two halves it was Britannia who took the early lead in this Furness Premier League clash when Martin Clarke slotted home after leaving a defender in his wake.

But from here on in the first 45 belonged mainly to Walney and they hit back when James Mitchell fed Simon Bassett and the son of prolific goal-scorer Steve made no mistake.

Mike Carr put Walney 2-1 up after a quick break by the Islanders and the same player made it 3-1 after being set up by Sam Clayton.

The scoreline stayed the same until half-time when the Brit’s management got to work and reshuffled their formation to great effect.

Sean Darby pounced on a loose ball to reduce the arrears and soon afterwards Liam Holmes was brought down in the box for a Britannia penalty which Ryan Jackson coolly tucked away.

With 20 minutes remaining Jack Kavanagh got on the end of a Cameron Clarke pass and the Brit had turned the game on its head and were leading 4-3. With 10 minutes remaining a player from each side was sent for an early shower following an altercation, and at this point Walney were throwing everything at their opponents to try and find an equaliser.

They managed this in the 90th minute thanks to Seth Storey, who was alert at the far post to sneak the ball in after a free-kick.

The game, which had more or less everything, finished 4-4 and the playing surface was outstanding considering the rainfall.

The only other game featuring a local team was played at Widnes FC as Holker Old Boys travelled looking for an improvement after last week’s heavy defeat at home to Chadderton.

And there was better news for new manager Brian Dawson as his team came back with a well-earned point in the North West Counties Division One match.

Holker took the lead through JP Stanway but were pegged back to 1-1 before having Gareth Smith sent off for a rash tackle.

Despite being down to 10 men Old Boys then took the lead when Sam Joel skipped past the Widnes defence to fire home. However, Widnes found an equaliser with 20 minutes remaining and the game finished 2-2.

Fingers crossed for better weather this week!
