THE Riflemans Garage Furness Premier Division title race is going to the wire – with further twists and turns almost certainly ahead.

After Vickerstown reserves defeated current leaders Kirkby United last Saturday, they seemed to be in a great position to go on and regain the title they last won in 2013.

However, after both teams won on Monday, they each dropped points on Wednesday to tighten things up. On Monday, Vickerstown beat Barrow Celtic 2-0 and Kirkby defeated Swarthmoor Social reserves 3-1, but on Wednesday Vickerstown lost 2-1 at home to Britannia and Kirkby were held to a 1-1 draw by Bootle

There was a remarkable goal in the game at Park Vale, as Brit's Jordan Wallace scored from 60 yards.

The results leave Vickerstown trailing Kirkby by two points but with a game in hand.

Kirkby host Holker Old Boys reserves tomorrow, while Vickerstown host Furness Cavaliers reserves on Wednesday in their next fixture.

Hawcoat Park reserves are five points adrift of Vickerstown in third place, but they kept their feint title hopes alive by thrashing Millom reserves 7-0 in midweek, with Jake Rees scoring five of the goals.

Millom and Barrow Wanderers, who lost 1-0 at Holker Old Boys, look destined to finish in the bottom two places.

Other results in midweek saw Furness Rovers reserves lose twice as their fixture backlog caught up with them.

They went down 5-3 at Askam United reserves on Monday and 2-1 at home to Furness Cavaliers reserves on Wednesday.

Barrow Celtic suffered the same fate, losing 3-2 at Swarthmoor Social reserves on Wednesday after Monday's defeat at Vickerstown.

Celtic have the weekend to recover prior to Monday's Terry Clinton Memorial Trophy Final against Hawcoat Park reserves at Longlands Park (6.30pm kick-off).

There was a rarity on Wednesday as GSK Ulverston Rangers reserves and Haverigg United played out a 0-0 draw.

It was only the fifth goalless game of the season in the Premier Division, although these two sides have been involved in four of them.

Having lost to Crooklands Casuals reserves last weekend, Walney Island reserves got back on track in their quest to finish runners-up in Premier Tiles Division One by beating Dalton United reserves 2-1 on Tuesday, with goals from Jordan Hughes and Josh Huitson.

They need to win at Barrow Celtic reserves tonight to secure a second place finish.

Other midweek games in Division One saw Hawcoat Park A win 3-2 at Lesh Lane against Barrow Wanderers reserves and Crooklands Casuals reserves draw 2-2 with champions Croftlands Park.

Crooklands Casuals recovered from last Saturday's disappointing 7-0 defeat at Hesketh Bank to beat Garstang 2-1 on Tuesday thanks to goals from Jasper Carey and Dave Mansergh.

Tomorrow they host Longridge Town, who are fourth in the West Lancs Premier Division table, so a tough game is expected.

Vickerstown were given a ridiculously long trip to Lostock St Gerards in midweek and went down 5-2 against a side who have strengthened in recent weeks and moved off the foot of the table.

Tomorrow, Dave Round's side welcome Charnock Richard to Park Vale and face a difficult task.

Not only do Charnock need a win to maintain their title challenge, but Vickerstown have several players missing as they are on Steve Brennan's stag weekend in Benidorm.

In Division One, Furness Senior Cup champions GSK Ulverston Rangers welcome Lytham Town to Canal Foot and, in Division Two, Swarthmoor Social travel to newly-crowned champions CMB.

Millom will be hoping to return from Blackpool Wren Rovers with some silverware as they face Bolton County on the Division Two Challenge Cup.

The league fixtures between the sides were both home wins, Millom triumphing 1-0 at Hanna Field but losing 3-1 at Bolton.

It will be Bolton County's last game in the West Lancs, as they are moving to a Manchester League next season to cut down on travelling expenses.

There is a meeting on Tuesday night for all West Lancs clubs, when the format for next season will be discussed.
