VICKERSTOWN A staged a remarkable comeback from three goals down to defeat Holker Old Boys A on penalties in the Horn Cup quarter-finals.

The match was full of entertaining football played in the right spirit between two Furness Premier League Division One teams.

Vickerstown played up the slope in the first half and the possession between the two teams was fairly even on a firm surface.

Holker were looking the more threatening of the two teams, with Chris Wraighte and Spencer Erdis both having half-chances to open the scoring.

On the stroke of half-time, Holker went ahead from a mix-up in the Vickerstown defence, Erdis putting the hosts ahead.

In the second half, Holker scored two good quick-fire goals through Spencer Erdis and Conor Erdis to go 3-0 up.

At this point it was one way traffic, but with 20 minutes to go Dave Goodwin broke down the left and scored an excellent goal from the edge of the 18-yard box for the visitors.

This sparked a Vickerstown fightback and they began to dominate proceedings.

A Phil Athersmith cross was volleyed in by Goodwin for 3-2, and minutes later Athersmith delivered another beautiful ball for Jay Rutherford to head home and make it 3-3.

With two minutes to go, player/manager Athersmith made an inspirational substitution, putting outfield player and penalty specialist Rich Humphreys in goals.

The game ended 3-3 and went to penalties, where the sub keeper saved two Holker spot-kicks to send Vickerstown through to the semi-finals.

In the other Horne Cup last-four matches, Ormsgill were beaten 2-1 by Crooklands Casuals reserves. Paul Fleming scored for Ormsgill, but strikes by Ben Phizacklea and Matt Pearson saw Crooklands progress to the next round.

Barrow Wanderers beat Walney Island A on penalties after a 2-2 draw. Andy Forristal and Craig McIlvogue scored for the Wanderers.

Millom A are also in the semi-finals after a 5-2 win over Bridge United. Ben McDonald, Jamie Pattinson (2) Joe Myers and an own-goal made up the Millom tally.

In the Furness Premier Division, Croftlands moved to the top of the table for the first time this season after a 2-0 win away at Millom reserves.

Paul Shields and Ben Mooney scored for the new league leaders, who now look red-hot favourites to claim the title at their first attempt.

Vickerstown reserves avenged their cup defeat earlier in the week by Furness Cavaliers reserves by beating them 5-2. Ivan Culak and James Watts scored for Cavs. Kev Bahamrenesh, Oscar Fleming, Danny Bewley, Robbie McMurdo and goalkeeper Josh Tranter, with a wind-assisted effort, gave the home side all three points.

The win was all the more remarkable as injuries and shifts meant Vickerstown started the game with 10 men, got up to the full complement and then were back down to 10 when Danny Bewley went off injured.

GSK Ulverston reserves beat Walney reserves 1-0 thanks to a goal from Sam Pinnegor. Kane Moffat missed a penalty for the Islanders.

Coniston wrapped up the Division One title by beating Haverigg United reserves 3-0. Tim Fletcher (2) and Phil Edmondson scored the goals.

In the West Lancs Premier Division, Vickerstown were beaten 2-0 on their last away trip of the season by joint-league leaders Longridge. Youngster Jackson Round was outstanding for Vickerstown and drew plenty of plaudits from the home crowd.

In Division One, GSK Ulverston Rangers pulled off the great escape by beating Mill Hill St Peters 5-4 thanks to Dean Crossman (3), Matt Lawlor and Callum Fawcett. GSK did it the hard way, coming from 4-2 down to secure their first division status.

In Division Two, Furness Cavaliers picked up three points after 3-1 home win against Hurst Green reserves. Ryan Rodgers, Jamie Hodgson and Tom Heap scored the Cavs goals

Swarthmoor were beaten 7-1 by Leyland and Furness Rovers were also defeated away at Thornton Cleveleys reserves. Rovers went down 4-1, Josh Jones with their goal.
