AFTER two months of rain causing games to be postponed, this Saturday a number of matches were called off due to the pitches being frozen.

The schedule was hit hard, particularly in Lancashire, and the only West Lancashire League game that took place on grass was in Barrow at the Training Pitch.

The Division Two derby clash between Furness Rovers and Walney Island was Walney’s first game since November 21 but after a goalless first half the Seasiders found their feet and came away with a 2-1 victory.

Keiron Solloway opened the scoring for Walney just after half-time but Andrew Whiteford soon leveled for Rovers, who came into this game full of confidence following a 4-0 win over Millom the week before Christmas.

The game was settled in the 68th minute when Matt Lockley scored the winning goal that moves Walney above Leyland into nintth place and onto 15 points along with Rovers and Millom.

One other West Lancs game was completed with Hawcoat Park playing against Turton in Division One on a 3G pitch at Darwen Academy.

They managed to finish the game despite snowfall throughout, but unfortunately for Hawcoat the hosts won 2-0 to move up to second place in the table.

Kirkby United played their Lancashire Cup fourth round tie away to Walmer Bridge at the sixth attempt and sadly they bowed out of the competition on penalties after a 2-2 draw.

Kirkby started well and went into a 2-0 lead through Paul Cleasby but the home side pulled a goal back before half-time and equalised midway through the second half as lack of match fitness took its toll.

Huw Barton and Cleasby both went close for Kirkby but the tie ended all square and Walmer’s keeper was their hero as he saved three penalties to win the shootout 3-2.

In the Travis Perkins Furness Senior Cup Furness Cavaliers progressed to the last four with a 4-0 win over Hawcoat Park reserves.

Marc Curtis headed Cavs in front in the first minute but Hawcoat gave a good account of themselves with the second goal not coming until the stroke of half-time through Kyle Delves.

After the break Ryan Rodgers added a third and Delves scored his second of the game to complete the scoring. Four Furness Premier League games did beat the freeze and all three of Walney Island’s teams saw action.

Their reserves played Barrow Wanderers reserves on Tummerhill in Premier Tiles Division One and won 3-2 with the goals coming from Brad Speake, a Chris Burns penalty and an own goal. Scott Burgess and Phil Chesworth replied for Wanderers.

Walney A played Ormsgill North End in the Horne Cup with Ormsgill winning comfortably 11-2.

Liam Cunningham and Brandon Haughin both scored hat-tricks, Paul Williams scored twice and Mike Browne, Connor Bone and Damian Minnican were also on target. Paul Davis and Brad McGill were Walney’s marksmen.

Two Division Two games were played with Millom A taking advantage of Ormsgill being in cup action to go top of the league following a 7-2 victory over Dalton United A.

Top scorer Mark O’Brien continued his great season scoring four goals with the other goals coming from Mike Brown, Danny Pattinson and Ryan Sheldon, who scored his first senior goal.

Tom Rutherford bagged a brace in reply for Dalton. The other game played involved the sides at the foot of the table and FC Barrow Island edged it, beating Coniston reserves 4-3 at Cavendish Park.

Chris Starkie scored the winner five minutes from time in his first game for four months following a knee injury.

Island’s other scorers were Chris Bell, Steve Smith and Ronnie Crompton while Gavin Scudamore, Jake Biles and Stuart Walker scored for Coniston.
