KIRKBY United have one hand on the Riflemans Garage Furness Premier Division title after Saturday's results saw them go seven points clear at the top of the table.

The Villagers easily accounted for a depleted Furness Cavaliers reserves, winning 7-0 through goals from Paul Cleasby (2), Matty Bruce, Andy Doull and Rob Fugler.

Cavs, who were so short that club secretary – and write of this column – Paul Wright had to play, contributed with two own goals.

It should be said that Kirkby were excellent and would probably have beaten a full-strength side.

The movement and finishing was very good and only a superb second-half display from keeper Kieran Roberts kept the score in single figures.

The title is now in Kirkby's hands as Vickerstown reserves lost 4-1 at Askam United reserves.

Askam's scorers were Brad Jackson (2), Jon France and Jordan Rayner. Andy Higginson netted Vickerstown's goal and they need Britannia to do them a favour on Wednesday night.

A win for Kirkby at Redwaters would see the Villagers win the title, but before that Vickerstown face a tough game at Holker Old Boys reserves tonight.

Hawcoat Park reserves are on a great run of form and they moved above Vickerstown into second place after beating Bootle 5-2. Scorers were Carl Mackay (2), Jake Rees, Sam Jefferson and manager Stu Walker. Graham Hartley and Harry Cowley replied for Bootle.

Haverigg United are fourth in the table following their 4-2 victory at Swarthmoor Social reserves

John Chmiel scored a hat-trick, with Gavin Scudamore also on target, while Charlie Price and Ben Mooney found the net for Swarthmoor.

Furness Rovers reserves beat Barrow Wanderers 5-2 thanks to goals from Seth Storey, Josh Jones, Brendan Trainor, Tom Clynch and Rob While.

Millom kept their hopes of getting out of the bottom two alive by beating Holker Old Boys reserves 3-1. Danny Pattinson scored against his former club, with Carl Waters and Andrew Woodburn also finding the net. Millom need four points from their last two games to move above Bootle.

On Friday night, Britannia edged a seven-goal thriller at Canal Foot as Liam Holmes and Ross Walker both scored twice in the 4-3 win over GSK Ulverston Rangers reserves. Josh Cronin, Peter Spence and Dan hall, with a free-kick from the halfway line, netted for Rangers.

That game was on Friday because Rangers first team were due to play Ladybridge in the West Lancashire League on Saturday, but the Bolton-based side said their bus had broken down and did not make the trip.

Three local sides did play, but they all lost.

In the Premier Division, Crooklands Casuals went down 4-2 at Burnley United and Vickerstown were beaten 7-3 at Southport Hesketh.

Mike Woods put Crooklands ahead at Burnley, but the home side responded to lead 2-1 at half-time. After the break, Dave Mansergh got Cassies level, but two goals in two minutes won the game for Burnley.

Dave Round Junior scored two penalties for Vickerstown and Dave Jepson was also on target at Southport.

The results mean Crooklands finish second from bottom and Vickerstown just one place above them.

The likelihood is that only bottom-placed Eagley will be relegated as, even though Burnley have withdrawn their resignation, Charnock Richard have been accepted into the North West Counties League.

Leyland United managed to get a side to come to Millom after failing to fulfil the fixture in April and they won 4-1 against a weakened Millom team. A-team player/manager Mark O'Brien scored a late consolation for the hosts.
