GSK Ulverston Rangers are looking to be more clinical in front of goal as they look to pull away from the West Lancs Division One danger zone.

The Canal Foot outfit will be aiming to put it right when Ladybridge – who leaked seven against Dalton United last month – visit tomorrow.

But Rangers secretary Phil Grant would be happy to see his side net just once – so long as it was enough to secure victory.

“The team have been playing really well recently, our biggest problem is that we just can’t put the ball in the back of the net, as the league table will show,” he said.

“I think we’re the worst scorers in the league, but I think we have got one of the best defences.”

Rangers beat Swarthmoor Social 6-0 in the Travis Perkins Furness Senior Cup quarter-finals on Tuesday to avenge Swarthmoor winning the league game between the respective reserves sides the previous week. Scorers were Jack Gardner (3), Dan Lee, Danny Leech and an own goal.

They will face Holker Old Boys reserves in the semi-finals later this month.

“Hopefully that might be a bit of a confidence-booster and we might start finding the back of the net,” said Grant.

“We have still got eight games to go, we have got to start trying to pick up some wins, we have drawn quite a few games.

“There is no way we are safe at the moment, because other teams can drag results from anywhere. It’s in our hands to be safe, but of course it is turning that into points.”

The weather caused more disruption this week and in the Furness Premier League Riflemans Garage Premier Division five of the seven games set for Wednesday were postponed.

Kirkby United were able to play and took full advantage by beating Askam United reserves 1-0 in a game badly affected by the strong wind.

Andy Doull scored the only goal that moved Kirkby up to third in the table, just two points behind Vickerstown reserves and Hawcoat Park reserves, with games in hand.

Hawcoat, second in the table, are still in two cup competitions and their young side certainly have lots of character and know where the net is.

Last week’s 5-5 draw with Holker Old Boys reserves came after they were 3-0 down and on Monday in the Paul Wilson Memorial Trophy they were 4-0 down against GSK Ulverston Rangers reserves but won 6-5 and even missed a penalty. Scorers were Brandon Collins (2), Jake Rees (2), Lewis Turner and Ollie Jackson. Rangers’ goals came from Dan Craig (2), Stuart Smith (2) and Peter Spence.

Tomorrow Hawcoat face Haverigg United in a crucial league game and they have a big fortnight ahead, with Haverigg to play again in the next round of the Paul Wilson Trophy and Vickerstown reserves in the league and Terry Clinton Memorial Trophy semi-finals.

Haverigg have slipped to fifth in the table but are just three points off top spot and are capable of beating anyone on their day.

Another big game tomorrow sees fourth-placed GSK Ulverston Rangers reserves visit Holker Old Boys reserves, who are sixth but only four points from the summit.

With so many games still to be played – only 57 per cent of the fixtures have been completed so far – there is still a lot to play for.

At the foot of the table, Millom reserves might just fancy their chances of pulling off a miracle and getting out of trouble. On Wednesday they secured their second league win of the season by beating local rivals Bootle 5-1. Scorers were Josh Keen (2), Steve Grieve, Danny Pattinson and Andrew Woodburn.

In Premier Tiles Division One, Walney Island reserves will be harbouring hopes of taking the runners-up spot. They lie fourth in the table and on Monday they beat current occupiers of that place, Holker Old Boys, A 2-1 at Tummerhill. Scorers were Jordan Hughes and Chris Burns, with Kev Hodgson on target for Holker.

In the West Lancashire League Premier Division on Wednesday, Vickerstown travelled to Garstang and came away with another point in their quest to stay out of the relegation battle.

Joe Pearson scored the equaliser in the 1-1 draw. Tomorrow they face a tough trip to Coppull United, while Crooklands Casuals have a must-win game at rock bottom Lostock St Gerards.

In Division One, Hawcoat Park are at Burscough Richmond in a game that will be crucial to the promotion battle.

Hawcoat are fourth in the table, four points behind Burscough and Ladybridge but with games in hand.

In North West Counties Division One, sixth-placed Holker Old Boys are at Hanley Town.
