THE two remaining games in the first round of the Travis Perkins Furness Senior Cup went with form as the West Lancashire League teams progressed at the expense of Furness Premier League teams.

It wasn’t without drama though with Furness Rovers only going through after a penalty shoot-out against Kirkby United.

In a very even game Andrew Whiteford put Rovers ahead on the hour mark but Matty Bruce equalised for Kirkby 10 minutes later.

Rovers held their nerve in the shoot-out with Scott Dempsey being the unfortunate player who saw his penalty hit the bar.

Liam Shields was outstanding in the centre of the park for Rovers with Bruce, Mike Code and Huw Barton impressing for Kirkby.

Referee Jimmy McLeish had his usual excellent game in the middle. Rovers’ reward is a trip to Walney Island.

GSK Ulverston Rangers won 6-3 at Haverigg United with a Danny Leech hat-trick being the difference between the two sides.

The other goals came from Reis Sharp, 2, and a Tom Heywood penalty while John Chmiel, 2, and Andrew Walker scored for Haverigg, who battled well and made Rangers work hard to get the result that earned them a home tie against Swarthmoor Social in the last eight.

It was a good day for Ulverston as their reserves went top of the FPL Riflemans Garage Premier Division with a 4-0 win at Askam United reserves.

After an even first 15 minutes Rangers scored three times in six minutes to take control of the game with Andy Butler scoring a header from a corner and a delicate chip plus a close range effort from Peter Spence.

Askam’s best chance saw the ball cleared off the line following a goalmouth scramble and Thomas James twice saved well from Brad Jackson long-range efforts, but the scoring was completed in the dying minutes when sub Brad Williamson scored following a mix-up in the Askam defence.

Previous leaders Furness Cavaliers reserves lost 3-2 at home to Hawcoat Park reserves. Kyle Delves put Cavs ahead from the penalty spot as they started well but Hawcoat equalised through Brandon Collins and went ahead with a Brandon Haughin own goal from a Zach Walker cross.

Carl Mackay made it 3-1 from another Walker cross before Sean Critchley pulled a goal back in the 89th minute.

Craig Salton rolled back the years with a superb display in central midfield and Ryan Magtoto blotted an otherwise great performance when he had a penalty saved by Keiran Roberts.

Holker Old Boys earned a fifth straight win as goals from Gareth Smith and Jake Carter saw them beat Bootle 2-0 and they are well placed in fourth.

Millom reserves gained their first win of the season with a 3-1 victory against Barrow Celtic. Scorers were Josh Keen, Jamie Cairns and Tyler Maxwell-Kelly with Jack Dulgnan replying for Celtic.

Barrow Wanderers and Furness Rovers reserves drew 1-1 at Lesh Lane. Jake Rees scored for the home side while Tom Clynch netted a penalty for Rovers.

Winter bit for the first time as games at Swarthmoor, Ulverston and Coniston were postponed due to waterlogged pitches.

Croftlands Park moved five points clear at the top of Premier Tiles Division One by inflicting a first league defeat on Crooklands Casuals reserves. Matt Dean, 2, and Shane Toal were on target with Jonny Grimes scoring for Cassies second team.

Holker Old Boys A got back to winning ways with a 4-2 win over Vickerstown A. Scorers were Spencer Erdis, 2, Connor Erdis and Greg Reynolds while Craig May and Mark Johnson scored for Vickerstown.

Walney Island reserves had a good 3-0 win over Dalton United reserves, the goals coming from Jon Harding, 2, and Bailey. Barrow Wanderers reserves won by the same scoreline at Barrow Celtic reserves thanks to goals from Scott Burgess, 2, and Scott Price.

Leaders Ormsgill North End are still six points clear at the top of Division Two despite their game with Barrow Celtic A being off as Celtic were unable to field a team.

Millom reserves moved up to second in the table with a convincing 6-3 victory over Bootle reserves.

Mark O’Brien scored a hat-trick to take his tally for the season to 14. Also on target were Nathan Chapples, Stewart Smith and Jon Patton while Kevin Hartley, 2, and Connor Brumby scored for Bootle.

Britannia reserves were too strong for a spirited Walney Island A, winning 6-0 with goals from Joseph Gedling, 2, Jonny Moore, 2, Connor McPherson and recent signing Danny Logan.

Kirkby United reserves beat Askam United reserves 6-1 with Kyle Hollings scoring twice on his full debut. The other goals came from Lee Tracey, 2, Andy Doull and a long-range effort from keeper Rob Greenway.

Local Interest in the Lancashire Amateur Shield ended at the last 16 stage with Vickerstown and Hawcoat Park bowing out.

Vickerstown’s 4-1 home loss to Division One side Tempest United was the more surprising of the two while Hawcoat Park gave Blackpool Wren Rovers more of a game than the 5-1 scoreline suggests as it was only 2-1 with 10 minutes left.

In the West Lancashire League Premier Division Crooklands Casuals gained three vital points at home to fellow strugglers Eagley in a game that belied their league positions with both teams playing well.

The game was made difficult by the strong wind and the visitors took the lead early in the second half but Cassies responded with a fine solo goal from Steve Caskie and a great finish from Chris Wraighte following good approach play by Dave Mansergh.

Jasper Carey orchestrated well from midfield but it took a goal line clearance at the death from Chris Low to ensure the score finished 2-1. In Division One Askam United stopped their run of defeats with a 3-3 draw at Lytham Town which moved them out of the bottom two on goal difference.

Scorers were Jordan Rayner, Matthew France and Jon France. Dalton United’s poor run continued however, as Gareth Jones scored their goal in a 5-1 defeat against Haslingden St. Mary’s.

Millom and Walney Island both had excellent away wins in Division Two. Millom recovered from being 2-0 down after four minutes to win 5-3 at Croston Sports. Scorers were Ben McDonald, Paul O’Callaghan, Carl Waters, Danny Pattinson and Graham Hartley.

A Connor Carson goal was enough to earn Walney Island all three points against Milnthorpe Corinthians. It wasn’t a good for Swarthmoor Social though as they lost 2-1 at Stoneclough with Josh Price scoring their goal.

Holker Old Boys are up to seventh in the North West Counties Division One after a 3-1 win at St Helens Town. A fourth minute own goal gave Holker the lead but the home side levelled early in the second half. John Paul Stanway restored the lead and a late Brad Hubbold goal wrapped up the points.

The Stags are one point outside the play-off places but with games in hand on the teams above them.

Cartmel stay top of the North Lancashire League Premier Division after an 8-0 away win over Storeys of Lancaster.
