IN the LFA Amateur Shield Askam hosted Furness Cavaliers, and with a number of Askam players missing due to a stag party Cavaliers were looking to cause a bit of an upset.

Unfortunately Askam didn’t let Cavaliers get into any sort of rhythm and Cavs’ achilles heel of defending set pieces came to the fore as they fell 1-0 behind to a goal from Huw Barton.

In the second half Macauley Woods had an equaliser chalked off for offside before Askam doubled the lead on the hour mark thanks to a Ross Walker goal.

Even though they were 2-0 down Cavs were the team in the ascendency, throwing everything at the Askam defence who were holding firm until a string of corners resulted in Tom Harris bundling the ball home to make it 2-1.

In an eventful end to the game Marc Curtis had two good chances and Ryan Rodgers hit the bar with a great header but the away side couldn’t find an equaliser.

Elsewhere in the competition Division Two side Walney Island made the trip to the seaside to play reigning Premier Division champions Blackpool Wren Rovers. In a spirited display from Walney they kept Wrens to a 1-0 half-time lead. Things got better just after half-time as Walney equalised through a James Bailey looping header. This sparked Wrens and they hit back with four goals until Mike Carr got a consolation goal that Steve McCullough’s team thoroughly deserved.

In the Furness Premier League Barrow Celtic drew 3-3 with Vickerstown Res. Celtic were 1-0 up through Andrew Hainey and should have been out of sight after hitting the bar three times.

Andy Higginson, Brad Palfreyman and Scott McDonald were on the scoresheet for the visitors.

A penalty from Dixon with only minutes remaining was enough for the three points and a tough start to management for Greg Waters who has taken over the reins at Wilson Park.
