MIDWEEK action in the West Lancashire League saw four derbies take place, and three of them proved to be clear-cut.

On Monday, GSK Ulverston Rangers reacted well to their opening-day loss by beating Hawcoat Park 3-0 in Division One. Hawcoat were left to rue missed chances as goals from Dean Crossman (2) and Sean Darby got GSK up and running for the season.

In Division Two, both derbies were 0-0 at half-time, but Millom and Walney Island had too much for Furness Rovers and Furness Cavaliers respectively in the second period.

At the Training Pitch, a brace from Carl Waters plus a goal from Ollie Pachul gave Millom a 3-0 win, while Walney went one better, beating Cavaliers 4-0. Kieron Solloway scored twice, with Jack Hargreaves and Matt Lockley also on target.

Dalton United made the trip to Kendal United and put their first win of the season on the board. Scott McCabe put them ahead, but Kendal levelled before half-time. Goals from Steve Harkin and Gareth Jones midway through the second half earned Dalton a 3-1 win.

Tuesday night saw Askam United host Crooklands Casuals and the home side were rocked when Jack Gardner gave Cassies a first-minute lead. Brad Jackson got them level before half-time but Kieran Clark restored the visitors’ lead 20 minutes into the second half.

Askam equalised in the 85th minute through Jordan Rayner and went close to getting a winner, but it ended 2-2.

In the Premier Division, Vickerstown welcomed Whitehaven to Park Vale but went down 6-2, with Dave Round junior and Danny Cummings again on target.

There was a full set of midweek Furness Premier League Premier Division games and it already looks like being a well-contested title fight this season.

Kirkby United strengthened in the close season and have won both games so far without conceding a goal, with Sam Pinnegor and Matty Bruce scoring as they won 2-0 at Millom reserves.

Vickerstown reserves and Britannia have also both won their opening games. Vickerstown beat Swarthmoor 4-1, with goals from Mike Imison, Tony Gooding, Jackson Round and Macauley Creighton. Swarthmoor’s reply came from a Rikki Gallagher penalty.

Andrew Whiteford scored all four of Britannia’s goals as they won 4-2 at Walney Island reserves. Walney’s scorers were Scott McDonald and James Burns.

Champions Croftlands Park were held to a 2-2 draw by Furness Cavaliers reserves. Martin Bowd and Sean Nicholson scored for Croftlands, with Jordan Hughes and Scott Linklater on target for Cavs.

Barrow Celtic won 4-3 at Dalton United reserves through braces from Connor Smith and Jack Dulgnan while Mark Jones, Jordan Fisher and Dan Hall scored for Dalton.

Bootle came out on top in the derby with Haverigg United, edging it 3-2 thanks to goals from Harry Cowley, Connor Nuttall and Will Singleton. Jack Cullen and Gavin Scudamore replied for Haverigg.

Hawcoat Park reserves recovered from their heavy defeat on Saturday by winning 3-1 at newly-promoted Coniston. Scorers were Jake Rees (2) and Ryan Mackay, while Phil Edmondson netted for Coniston in their first-ever Premier Division fixture.

GSK Ulverston Rangers reserves have asked to be demoted to Division Two as they have lost a number of senior players and their team will be mainly last season’s under-16s, while Sunday League side British Legion have applied to join the FPL.

Legion were previously long- established members of the North Western Leagu,e but with the future of the Sunday League uncertain, they make a return to Saturday football.
