MILLOM manager Brian Dawson has set a target of finishing as the top local side in the West Lancs Division Two table at the end of the season.

It is a position they currently hold and they have the chance of putting more points in the bag tomorrow when they look to complete the double over Walney Island after beating them 2-1 at Tummerhill in January.

But Dawson is aware of the task ahead for his side against a Walney outfit managed by Steve McCullough.

Both teams had tough encounters last week.

Millom won 3-2 at Stoneclough, but league leaders Kendal County proved too tough a nut to crack for hosts Walney, who were edged out 2-1.

Looking ahead to the Walney visit, Dawson said: “They are half-decent side so it will be a tough game, but I am sure if we play to our potential we can get the result.”

Playing at home has been something of a rarity for Millom this season – their last match at Devonshire Road was back in October, a game which resulted in a 3-0 win over Swarthmoor.

The side have some catching up to do before the season draws to a close, having played just five times on home soil.

Since his appointment, just weeks before the campaign began, Dawson has brought a number of Millom players back to the town, like the Pattinson brothers Danny, Stuart and Jamie, along with Craig Redhead, from Holker Old Boys.

They have joined up with other recruits, centre-back Graham Hartley, who arrived from Bootle, and midfielder Drew Postlethwaite.

Millom, who have yet to draw in the league this season, have won five games on the road and Dawson believes that success has been down to the players returning to the club.

But looking ahead, he added: “This year was always going to be like a year of transition for us in terms of personnel.

“It was pretty evident that we had a poor start to the season but we are starting to pick up points and do particularly well at the moment.

“It all bodes well for next season I hope. I would like to finish the highest out of the local teams, so that would mean a top six finish, even Bolton County are within our grasp.

“I think the top four are running away with it a little bit in terms of points and games left, and, to be fair, they are four really good sides.

“If we can finish at the top of the tree of the others, then that would be a really good achievement.

Millom are still in the Challenge Cup and host CMB, who travel to Furness Cavaliers tomorrow, in the next round on April 2. Meanwhile, Swarthmoor host Furness Rovers in Division Two tomorrow.

In the Premier Division, Vickerstown will aim to pick up points against bottom side Lostock St Gerards at Park Vale, while Crooklands Casuals travel to Thornton Cleveleys.

Holker Old Boys will be looking to bounce back from their midweek 5-0 reversal at Rakesmoor Lane against St Helens Town in North West Counties Division One when they head to Northwich Manchester Villa.
