AFTER dominating the Barrow Sunday League for several years, British Legion are determined to succeed on their return to the Furness Premier set-up.

The Legion take on Barrow Celtic A at Ormsgill tomorrow in a Division Two match looking to kick-start their campaign, having lost their league opener 4-1 against Holker Old Boys A last week.

With manager Trevor Gill having assembled a squad packed with hungry young players, the Legion have high hopes of making a big impression in the FPL.

Gill is supported by a backrom staff of Sue Gill, David Hayton and secretary Mark Zuniga, who said: “We are the current North Western Senior League Sunday League champions and have been for the last five seasons, but we have moved over to the Furness Premier League as the NWSFL is having a gap year.

“Our team consists mainly of young lads wanting to play football, as well as a few seasoned veterans. Trevor Gill has assembled his own squad since losing a few players because of the transition from Sundays to Saturdays and with some players already having Saturday clubs.

“The team has also been set up in memory of the late British Legion legend Robert ‘Bob’ Eunson who died in 2016 after his battle with cancer.”

The club’s new away kit has been sponsored by Sarah Gilbert, who owns and runs The Hair Lab in Ainslie Street, Barrow. She also provided and sponsored the Legion’s home kit during last season’s Sunday League triumph. Players and supporters will be running a fund-raiser at the British Legion in the coming weeks to help pay for new equipment.
