IN conditions more akin to the middle of winter rather than the final few weeks of summer, Britannia hosted the visit of Haverigg United to Redwaters.

Britannia went into the game on the back of two wins while Haverigg had started the season somewhat surprisingly with two defeats and were in a little bit of disarray, with their manager resigning prior to the game.

Anthony ‘Fozzy’ Foster, Stuart Jeynes and Luke Chmiel took the reins for the game and they got a winning Haverigg performance for their efforts.

In a game in which the weather was taking centre stage and where both teams were struggling to find any rhythm, it was Haverigg who took the lead.

After some neat play from Maine and Chmiel a shot by Foster was well saved but the ball ended up bouncing off a defender for an own goal. Haverigg had a couple of chances to extend their lead prior to half-time but the woodwork kept the score at 1-0 at the break.

In the second half, with the wind and rain getting stronger, it was another own goal that put Haverigg 2-0 ahead. With Britannia pushing for an equaliser, Haverigg broke away and a great ball in from the right wing was deflected in by a defender.

John Chmiel made it 3-0 when he rounded the keeper and slotted home. Seventeen-year-old Tyler McPherson put in a great performance for Britannia while 16-year-old Blair Clarke was Haverigg’s stand-out player.

Elsewhere in the Furness Premier League Bootle visited Croftlands’ new home of Cavendish Park and left with all three points thanks to goals from Matt Clark and Josh French. Matt Dean scored for Croftlands.

At Rampside Road Furness Cavaliers Res beat Millom Res 4-2. Millom were 2-1 up at half-time thanks to Tony Woodburn and Josh Keen. Lee Rodgers hit the home side’s reply.

The home side found an equaliser from Jack Browne and Mike Robinson made it 3-2 to Cavaliers and as Millom pressed for an equaliser Jake Marston made the score 4-2 in injury time.

Hawcoat Park Res took the trip over Walney Bridge to play Walney Island Res and won 6-2. Hawcoat’s goals came from Mike Wilkes against his old club, Jordan Rooney, Sam Jefferson, Tom Hammond, Ben Stoker and an own goal. James Mitchell and Luke Thompson replied.

Holker Old Boy Res and Vickerstown Res served up an eleven-goal thriller. Playing down the slope with the wind at their backs, it was Vickerstown who found themselves 1-0 down thanks to a cross-come-shot from JP Stanway.

Vickerstown levelled almost immediately through Brad Palfreyman and it was 5-2 to the visitors at half-time, Mike Adams, Mike Imison, Kev Bahamrenesh and Ian Rogers all finding the net while Jack Pedley scored for Holker.

Turning around with the wind at their backs, Holker were back on level terms with JP Stanway adding three more goals for a personal tally of four.

With chances at either end it looked as if someone would always find a winner and Jackson Round popped up unmarked in the area to give Vickerstown a 6-5 victory.

In a game that saw 11 goals, the keepers, Ibukun Bamigboye and Josh Tranter, made a series of brilliant saves and Connor Robinson had a great game for Vickerstown.

In the North West Counties Division One Holker Old Boys bounced back from the loss to Daisy Hill during the week and defeated Eccleshall 4-1. The goals came from Jamie Pattinson (2) Sam Joel and an own goal.

In the West Lancs Premier League Crooklands came away from previously unbeaten Euxton Villa with a fantastic 4-2 win.

The home side went ahead on 14 minutes but Cassies equalised through Dave Mansergh who prodded home after latching on to a great through ball from Dave Goude. Euxton took the lead before half-time, but after some neat play from Mansergh and Goude it was Goude who made it 2-2 with an excellent finish.

On the hour mark Tony Butler put Cassies ahead and although Euxton pushed for an equaliser it was Crooklands who rounded off the day with an injury-time goal from Mansergh.

Vickerstown hosted Slyne-with-Hest and took an early lead through Danny Keenan. Slyne equalised within five minutes. Dave Round Junior put the home side 2-1 up but they couldn’t hold on to the lead and again Slyne equalised almost immediately.

The game stayed 2-2 until the final ten minutes when a disputed penalty gave the away side all three points.

In Division One Askam lost 1-0 at home to Stoneclough and Hawcoat drew 3-3 with Haslingden St Mary’s. Hawcoat were 3-0 up at half-time with goals from Carl Mackay, Nath Reid and Matt Haythorn, but in conditions typical of the day Haslingden turned the game around with the wind at their backs, and with two goals in the first 15 minutes of the second period it looked as though they would run away with it.

Hawcoat stood firm and it wasn’t until the last minute that Haslingden found the equaliser.

Swarthmoor took a trip to the seaside to play Blackpool Wren Rovers Res and were defeated 4-3. Goals from Phil Edmondson and a brace from Sean Nicholson were not enough against a strong Wren Rovers side who scored in the last minute through an own goal.

Millom were defeated 5-2 at Croston Sports, Millom’s goals coming from Carl Waters and Dave Cooper.

In what could have been result of the day, bottom side Walney Island visited table-toppers Fulwood Amateurs Reserves and came away with a point thanks to a great team performance.
