IT was an important week in cup competitions with Barrow Celtic booking their place in the Terry Clinton Memorial Trophy final by beating Swarthmoor Social 3-1.

Celtic will play Hawcoat Park reserves.

Hawcoat’s hopes of a cup double were ended by Haverigg United, who got revenge for a recent league defeat by winning 1-0 in the quarter-finals of the Paul Wilson Memorial Trophy through an Andrew Walker goal.

Haverigg’s opponents in the semi-final will be Vickerstown reserves, who progressed with a 3-1 victory over Dalton United reserves.

The Travis Perkins Furness Senior Cup is also down to the last four after Furness Rovers beat fellow West Lancashire League Division Two side Walney Island 2-0 at Tummerhill.

Rovers face Furness Cavaliers in the semi-finals next Tuesday at Rampside Road, while GSK Ulverston Rangers host Holker Old Boys reserves at Glaxo.

The Junior Cup semi-finals are on Monday night, with Croftlands Park playing Millom reserves and Britannia reserves playing Furness Rovers reserves.

In the Horne Cup, Croftlands Park reached the semi-finals by beating Vickerstown A 4-0 with Matt Dean scoring twice to take his tally for the season to 51.

Prior to the game, Croftlands were presented with the Premier Tiles Division One trophy by sponsor Dave Staunton.

There were also a number of league games played in the FPL and Kirkby United went top of the Rifleman’s Garage Premier Division with another last-gasp win over Barrow Wanderers.

On Wednesday night, Kirkby repeated last Saturday’s 3-2 victory with two late goals from Mark Jackson.

GSK Ulverston Rangers reserves moved up to third in the table with a 3-2 win over Millom reserves, but Holker Old Boys reserves lost ground by losing 1-0 at home to Furness Cavaliers reserves.

However, there are only five points covering the top six teams and, with up to 11 games to play for some of them, there are still a few twists left in an intriguing season.

In Premier Tiles Division One, Croftlands may have sealed the title but runners-up position is still up for grabs and Walney Island made their move with a 3-2 win over GSK Ulverston Rangers A, which consigned Rangers’ third team to a bottom-placed finish.

Hawcoat Park A slipped up, losing 2-0 to Barrow Wanderers reserves while Crooklands Casuals reserves beat Barrow Celtic 4-3. Dan Sharp scored a hat-trick for Cassies, with Jordan White scoring all three for Celtic.

In Division Two, Britannia reserves’ 3-2 defeat against Dalton United A ensured that Millom A finished as runners-up.

However, Millom’s season did not end in style as they lost 6-1 to in-form Kirkby United reserves. Mark O’Brien scored his 30th goal of the season but was outshone on the night by Connor Saunders, who scored four goals and Kyle Hollings, who scored twice.

In the West Lancashire League, Askam United’s season ended on a high as goals from Kris McLean and Kyle Jefferson earned a 2-1 win over Hawcoat Park.

The defeat dented Hawcoat’s hopes of finishing as runners-up and they have a must-win game at Burscough Richmond tomorrow before facing Dalton United on Tuesday at Railway Meadow.

In Division Two, Millom edged a scrappy game with Furness Cavaliers 1-0 through a Danny Pattinson goal.

Millom play Walney Island in the Division One Cup semi-final on Tuesday at Furness Rovers and there’s another derby tomorrow as Walney host Cavaliers at Tummerhill.

Holker Old Boys were held to a goalless draw by Stockport Town that keeps both sides in the play-off places in North West Counties Division One.

Scott Redhead’s side are in the middle of a busy period of five games in 10 days but will still expect to take maximum points at home to Northwich Manchester Villa tomorrow before a tough trip to Bacup Borough on Monday.
