City Women are in Denmark to play Fortuna Hjørring in the first leg of the quarter-finals.
It is their first season in the Champions League – with the likes of champions Lyon, Barcelona and Bayern Munich still in the competition – and Barrow ace Stanway is hoping it can be a memorable debut.
Women’s Super League champions City have already knocked out another Danish team, Brøndby, to reach the last eight of the European tournament, and the 18-year-old is looking for more progress.
“We want to progress in the Champions League and get to the final, which will be held in Cardiff,” said Stanway, who played alongside new City signing Carli Lloyd in the FA Cup win over Reading last weekend, their first game of the season.
“The competition is much higher. As Manchester City Women, we want to compete to be Europe’s best. Competing in the Champions League is another stepping stone, and it’s how we’re going to get there.
“Teams have been in the Champions League and competed in it for many years, so for this to be our first time and we’re through to the quarter-finals is a really positive step forward. Now it’s maintaining the momentum we’ve got from last season and the pre-season we’ve had – as well as the FA Cup win – to make sure that we do achieve and we do get the win against Fortuna.”
