GEORGIA Stanway came off the bench and scored a crucial goal as Manchester City reached the quarter-finals of the Women's FA Cup.

The Barrow teenager struck decisively in extra-time as City defeated Birmingham City 3-1, having been locked at 1-1 after 90 minutes.

“I'm so happy to have come on and made an impact,” Stanway told mancity.com. “You have to take your chances when they come.

“The FA Cup is so special to me, and we showed amazing character as a team to grind out the win.”

In a repeat of last year's final, which Stanway and her team-mates won 4-1 at Wembley, the former Blackburn Rovers youth put City 2-1 up, with Claire Emslie also on target in the extra 30 minutes.

Seven minutes into extra-time, Stanway collected the ball inside the penalty area cut inside and smashed home her 15th goal in City colours.

The youngster also had an attempt cleared off the line by Jess Carter.

Emslie wrapped up the win with a curling effort into the top corner.

Earlier, Nadia Nadim’s strike – her third for City – had been cancelled out by Ellen White, with little to separate the sides.

City, who are still in contention for four trophies this season – much like their male counterparts – have been drawn away at Sunderland in the quarter-finals on Sunday, March 18.

The Sky Blues face Birmingham once again in the Women's Super League on Wednesday night, before hosting title rivals Chelsea on Saturday, to conclude a week Stanway has said is 'potentially season-defining’.
