BARROW duo Nathan Waterston and Sam Joel helped Workington Reds pull off an FA Trophy upset against Hartlepool United.

The Evo-Stik Premier Division promotion-chasers beat Barrow AFC's National League rivals 1-0 at Borough Park.

And it was Waterston who set up the only goal of the game, with the supersub – who replaced Joel – winning the ball from the Hartlepool defender before showing his pace up the right wing.

Then he put a superb cross in to meet the onrushing Scott Allison and he hit a thunderous volley, first time, past the keeper, much to the delight of the home faithful in the 771-strong crowd.

Waterston's efforts drew praise from boss Lee Andrews after the game.

"I feel sorry for Nathan, because he's having to be patient as the team are doing well, we're not losing games," said Andrews.

"But, to be fair to him, he's coming on week in week out and he is influencing the games and making things happen and he's done it again today.

"Nathan put the cross in and there was still a lot of work to do and Scotty has just finished it brilliantly, as we know he can do."

Workington also included former Bluebirds Dave Symington and keeper Aaran Taylor in their side, and Taylor was another praised by Andrews, as he made a number of key saves.

"We come to expect it every week from Aaran, he pulls off saves like that. It maybe seems harsh that we just expect it but they were two world class saves," added Andrews.

Workington will join Barrow in the second round draw, which takes place at 1pm today.
