FOOTBALLING ace Georgia Stanway has been picked out as one of Britain's top 10 young sporting superstars.

The Barrovian Manchester City and England Under-17s player is one of 10 growing talents shortlisted for the BBC Young Sports Personality of the Year Award.

Stanway has enjoyed a stellar 2016, featuring for City in the Women's Super League and UEFA Champions League, and scoring a number of stunning goals – two of which have been nominated for the club's goal of the year award.

She scored her first senior hat-trick for City against Sunderland Ladies, and has been tipped by England manager Mark Sampson as one for the future at open-age level.

Internationally this season, the 17-year-old scored three goals for England at the Under-17s World Cup in Jordan, and also netted twice as the Young Lionesses qualified for the global tournament with a third-placed finish at the European Championships.

Other athletes nominated for the award are gymnasts Amy Tinkler and Ellie Downie – last year's winner – Paralympic swimmer Ellie Robinson, Paralympic archer Jess Stretton, rugby union's Keelan Giles, Paralympic rower Lauren Rowles, weightlifter Rebekah Tiler, cricketer Sophie Ecclestone and Paralympic swimmer Tom Hamer.

Past winners of the award include world tennis number one and two-time Wimbledon and Olympic champion Andy Murray, footballer Wayne Rooney and multiple-Paralympic swimming gold medallist Ellie Simmonds.

A final shortlist of three contenders for the award – chosen by a panel including broadcaster John Innverdale, taekwondo Olympian Lutalo Muhammad and sprinter Dina Asher-Smith – will be announced on Blue Peter on Thursday, December 8, with the winner named during the Sports Personality of the Year programme in Birmingham on Sunday, December 18.
