BARROW'S Georgia Stanway has been called into the England Women's squad for the SheBelieves Cup.

The 19-year-old Manchester City forward is one of three players drafted into the squad following the withdrawal if a trio included in the initial line-up.

Stanway's first call-up comes alongside Rachel Daly and Abbie McManus being included by the Lionesses.

She joined up with the squad on Saturday night, and will travel with the squad to the United States on Sunday, with England's first match coming with Thursday’s tournament opener against France in Columbus, Ohio.

England then have matches against Germany in Harrison, New Jersey, and the hosts in Orlando, Florida, on March 4 and 7 respectively.

The newly-named trio were called up after Steph Houghton, Jordan Nobbs and Karen Carney had to withdraw from manager Phil Neville's squad. Stanway is seen as a replacement for Arsenal player Nobbs.

Neville said: "When I named the squad I mentioned there were some exciting players pushing hard for inclusion.

"While we are sorry to lose three experienced names, this is a brilliant opportunity for Rachel, Abbie and Georgia.

"It also means I get to see at first hand some of those who will be pushing the more established players for a place in our World Cup plans."

Stanway has been in goal-scoring form for Manchester City of late, helping to send them into the quarter-finals of the women's FA Cup last weekend, with an extra-time goal in the 3-1 win over Birmingham City.

And she came off the bench against Chelsea on Saturday and fired an amazing 20-yard equaliser into the top corner as they came from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 with Chelsea in the Women's Super League.

Speaking to mancity.com after the Chelsea win but before her international call-up, South Cumbrian teenager Stanway – who played for Furness Rovers as a junior – said:

“It feels like we’ve won the game, although it was only a draw.

“The first half performance was not up to our standards but we put it right in the second half and hopefully, we can grow from here.

“It shows what we’re capable of and that the bench is just as important as the starting team. Nick can put anyone on and they’ll do a job.

“We showed we have the character to come back from 2-0 down. We’ve got the endeavour and we’ll work hard to get to where we want to be.”

On her goal, she added: “I can’t remember it!

“I think it was Jill who passed it to me. I just put my foot through it and it happened to land in the top corner. I can’t complain!”
