ASKAM United took the spoils in the weekend’s big derby match with a 3-0 win against Dalton United in West Lancs Division One.

Early missed chances from Dalton – now being managed by club stalwart Ian Callison – came back to haunt them.

Ryan Barker and Danny Leech both had opportunities for the visitors, but failed to convert and this seemed to spark Askam into life, with Jordan Rayner driving on from midfield and causing problems in the Dalton back-line.

The stalemate was broken just before half-time when Rayner’s shot was well saved but he was first to react and finished the rebound off.

Dalton responded well after half-time and wasted another good chance to level matters.

A pretty even second half swung in Askam’s favour when Callum Rayner buried a free-kick from 35 yards.

With Dalton now chasing the game, the hosts were breaking at will and Joe Kavanagh sealed the game in the 77th minute with a tidy finish.

Dalton never gave up and created some late chances. Askam themselves could have had a fourth goal, but pulled a late chance wide.

It was a good performance by Askam, with some clinical finishing the difference on the day. Jordan Raynor had an outstanding game for the home side.
