WITH the season drawing to a close there were lots of trophies decided during the week and lots of dramatic action unfolded.

Askam United lifted the Furness Senior Cup with a penalty shootout victory over Millom at Holker Street.

The clash between Askam of the West Lancs League Division One and their rivals from Division Two ended up 2-2 after normal time with Askam triumphing 5-4 on penalties.

The game started badly for Askam as goalkeeper Phil Postlethwaite had to be replaced inside the first ten minutes after suffering an injury.

Millom settled into the game much better and were playing some neat football against the higher league opposition. The impressive Ben McDonald opened the scoring for Millom with an outstanding 30-yard effort into the top corner.

A Jordan Rayner penalty just before half-time levelled the scores and Askam were much better in the second half. Good work from Ryan Brown saw him put them 2-1 up and they looked to be on their way to victory until injury time when an Askam player was adjudged to have handled in the area.

Up stepped Carl Waters and he made no mistake from 12 yards to level matters and take it to penalties.

Askam scored all their spot kicks and Millom had done the same until Askam’s stand-in goalkeeper Stuart Neillands became the hero as he saved McDonald’s effort.

It was a cruel way to lose as in most people’s eyes McDonald had been man of the match.

Askam’s penalty scorers were Scott Steele, Ryan Brown, Jordan Rayner, Mike Thomson and Joe Kavanagh, with Lee Postlethwaite, Theo Wilson, Steve Grieve and Carl Waters replying.

Millom fared better in the Junior Cup final where their reserves team beat Cartmel A 3-1.

Millom went 1-0 up through Mike Plews before youngster Adrian Pearson produced a cool finish to level the scores. Cartmel then hit the bar before Millom were awarded a penalty which Andy Woodburn converted. The Cartmel keeper nearly kept the spot kick out and in the process of doing so badly injured his shoulder. The stand-in keeper could do nothing but stand and watch as Jamie Cairns volleyed home number three from a superb Ryan Tyson through ball.

The Furness Premier League title went to Croftlands who played out a 0-0 draw with Vickerstown at Park Vale.

This result meant that Barrow Celtic had to beat Furness Cavaliers Reserves, who were fourth from bottom at the start of play. But a strong Cavs side turned the tables upside down and won 4-3. Brad Carroll, Newby, Ivan Culak and Kyle Delves scored for Cavs, while Rob Johnson (2) and Andy Hainey replied for Celtic who finished as runners-up.

In the Paul Wilson Cup semi-finals Ormsgill beat higher league opposition in the form of Millom Reserves 3-1.

Dean McClarey, Mike Crampton and Damo Minnican scored for Ormsgill, while Jamie Cairns replied for Millom, who had lifted the Junior Cup just two days earlier.

Elsewhere in the Premier Division, Holker Reserves beat GSK Ulverston Reserves 5-3. Troy Magee (2) JP Stanway (2) and Josh Tweddle were the Holker marksmen.

Haverigg United play Vickerstown Reserves tonight in the Terry Clinton Cup final at Dalton United’s Railway Meadow pitch (6.30pm kick-off).

Dalton United end their season tomorrow in a rearranged match at home to Stoneclough, which will see Ian Callison – a veteran of more than 500 matches over 19 years – play in his last match.
