A SEASON that has been disrupted more than any other in recent memory, continued to form with more games postponed due to incessant rain on Saturday morning.

Downpours flooded pitches that have been struggling for months against the elements.

There has been a lot said about grass-roots football needing an injection of money to help pitches, but the lack of a full-sized 3G pitch to host open age fixtures continues to be a big issue in South Cumbria.

Unfortunately there is no magic wand, and for the foreseeable future it is up to club volunteers up and down the peninsula to carry on with the hard work of trying to get games on for their teams.

One game that was given the go-ahead was Holker Old Boys’ North West Counties Division One clash with Whitchurch Alport at Rakesmoor Lane.

Holker are still hunting around the play-off spots, while the visitors look a safe bet to finish in the top five.

The teams put on a great show for the spectators, with Holker winning by the odd goal in seven, six of which were scored in the second half.

Gareth Smith put Holker 1-0 ahead on the half-hour-mark, and Holker held the advantage as the players went for their half-time oranges.

Old Boys came out all guns blazing in the second period, and two goals in the first 10 minutes of the half through James Bonner and Nath Reid had the home side 3-0 up, and it seemed the points were in the bag.

But Whitchurch started an amazing comeback on 70 minutes and scored again only five minutes later. With 10 minutes left on the clock, Alport thought they had completed the comeback with an equaliser.

But Holker were not finished, and dragged themselves off the canvas to find a late winner thanks to Craig Redhead finding the top corner.

Old Boys have nine league fixtures remaining, so there are plenty of points to play for, and on this showing could very well make the play-offs.

Millom’s impressive season continued as they emphatically beat Ladybridge 5-1 in the West Lancs Challenge Cup semi-final at Milnthorpe.

Phil Edmondson (2), Carl Waters (2) and man-of-the-match Jamie Pattinson all scored in what was a great display from the Devonshire Road-based outfit.

With league leaders Leyland expelled from the competition, Millom are now hot favourites to lift the trophy.

Crooklands Casuals picked up three points in West Lancs Division One with a 5-1 win over basement dwellers Mill Hill St Peters. Steve Caskie (2), Jasper Carey, Ben Wheeler and Dave Mansergh all found the net.

Hawcoat Park also beat a relegation-threatened side as they dispatched Fulwood Amateurs reserves 9-1. Zach Walker took the match ball home after bagging a hat-trick, with Hacken McCraken (2), Elliott Moore, Sam Cunningham and Ben Stoker the other goal-scorers.

Askam United lost 6-2 at home to Eagley, with brothers Jordan and Callum Rayner on target for the hosts.

Furness Rovers drew 1-1 at home against Euxton Villa reserves, with Liam Shields the Rovers marksman.

Walney Island travelled to Lostock St Gerards reserves, who had hired a local 3G pitch and came away with a point after 1-1 draw. James Bailey put the Islanders 1-0 up in the first half, but they could not hold out. Youngsters Robbie Potter and Joe Hayes gave good accounts of themselves on their first-team debuts.

Hawcoat Park reserves took another giant stride towards the Furness Premier League title with a 7-0 win over Furness Cavaliers reserves.

Carl Mackay scored a hat-trick, with Carl Pearson (2), Tom Hammond and Frankie Ellis also on target for the league leaders.

Kirkby sit third in the table after a 3-1 win against Swarthmoor. Gardner (2) and Paul Cleasby shared the goal-scoring duties for Kirkby.

Walney Island reserves drew 1-1 at home against Holker Old Boys reserves. Seth Storey continued his goal scoring exploits for Walney and Christian Squire replied for Holker.

Barrow Wanderers beat Barrow Celtic A 4-1 in the first round of the Horne Cup, as Jed Wilkinson helped himself to a match ball after his hat-trick and Craig McIlvogue scored on his return from injury. Danny Mackay replied for Celtic.

In Furness Division One, Haverigg United reserves beat Ormsgill North End 5-2. Luke Chmiel, John Chmiel, Alan Craghill, Hadley Thompson and Ben Whiteside all found the net for the Wilson Park outfit. Anthony Brown and Steve Crompton on target for Ormsgill.

On Friday night, Crooklands Casuals reserves drew 4-4 with Vickerstown A. Cassies’ scorers were Terry Anderson, Scott Phizacklea and Ben Phizacklea (2), with Ben Wright (2), Mike Robinson and player/manager Phil Athersmith on target for Vickerstown.

Only one fixture took place in Division Two, as Millom St James beat Kirkby United reserves 2-0, Mark O’Brien scoring both of Millom’s goals.

The midweek fixtures start in earnest this week, culminating in the Furness Senior Cup semi-final between Askam United and Walney Island on Thursday night at Rakesmoor Lane (7pm kick-off). There will be a full round-up of the results in Friday’s Mail.
