BARROW Celtic and Kirkby United are aiming to end their respective droughts in cup competitions when they contest the Paul Wilson Memorial Trophy at Rakesmoor Lane tonight (6.30pm).

Celtic and Kirkby have both won the Furness Premier League Premier Division in recent seasons, but success in the knock-out competitions has so far eluded them.

For Celtic, this is the first time they have reached the Paul Wilson final, having been runners-up in the Terry Clinton Memorial Trophy in 2014 and 2016.

Kirkby, on the other hand, have been beaten by Barrow Wanderers in 2011 and Vickerstown reserves two years ago in the final of this competition. Like Celtic, they have lost two Terry Clinton finals as well, in 2010 and 2015.

Rob Johnson was the semi-final hero for Celtic, with his strike being enough to put them through to the final as they edged out Vickerstown’s second string 1-0.

Meanwhile, Huw Barton netted both for Kirkby as they secured their final spot courtesy of a 2-0 win over cup holders Holker Old Boys reserves.

Bridge United are going for their first FPL cup triumph when they take on Crooklands Casuals reserves in the final of the Horne Cup next Wednesday at Longlands Park.

Crooklands won the competition three times in the 1990s, but have been beaten finalists three times this decade – including in the two most recent editions.

Two goals from Josh Harris helped Bridge into the final with a 3-2 win over Croftlands reserves. Sam Davies got the other for United.

Terry Anderson and Andy Benson were the men who fired Crooklands through to the decider for the third year in a row as they saw off Kirkby reserves.

Elsewhere on Monday, Millom were unable to cap their impressive season with another cup victory as they were beaten 5-3 on penalties against Charnock Richard reserves in the West Lancashire League Challenge Cup final, which finished 0-0.

However, the team can look back with pride on a campaign which saw them secure promotion to Division One and lift the Furness Senior Cup.

The Bank Holiday league action saw Vickerstown denied by a late goal at Southport Hesketh, going down 3-2 after Danny Keenan and Danny Cummings had got them back on level terms.

In Division One, Hawcoat Park were beaten 3-2 as well at home to title hopefuls Poulton, with Elliott Moore and Joe Tindale on target for the hosts.

GSK Ulverston Rangers went down 2-0 on the road to Lostock St Gerards and in Division Two, Dalton United were beaten 5-0 away to Padiham reserves. Holker Old Boys also suffered a 5-0 defeat to champions Silsden in North West Counties League Division One.

Wednesday evening’s FPL action saw a hat-trick from Matt Dean help Croftlands Park defeat Dalton reserves 4-2 away, with Paul Hartley netting the other for the visitors.

Ian McPherson and Tony Wright were denied a winning send-off in the dugout at Britannia as they were beaten 5-0 away to Holker Old Boys reserves.

Mark Daly got two for the home side, with Josh Tweddle, Josh Woodend and Spencer Erdis getting Holker’s others.

And Mike O’Neill’s first goal for Swarthmoor Social proved to be doubly memorable as it turned out to be the winner in their 1-0 victory at home to Celtic.
