A PACKED first midweek of the new season saw a pair of derby matches in the West Lancashire League.

Crooklands Casuals got off the mark with a 3-1 home win over Millom in Division One.

Cassies started well and were 3-0 up inside 20 minutes after Steve Caskie, Jasper Carey and Paul Wrathall all found the back of the net.

Millom – who scored seven on the opening day of the season – tried to get back into the game and pulled a goal back after 70 minutes through Craig Redhead, but they could not find a second.

Askam United lost their second game in three days after a 5-2 defeat at home against Hawcoat Park.

Hawcoat raced into a two-goal lead and scored in the first minute of the second half to seemingly put the game to bed.

Askam dragged themselves back into the contest through Kyle Jefferson and Sam Purslow, but a strong finish from Trev Houston’s men secured the three points.

Elliot Moore (3), Chris Sloan and Joe Tindale were all on target to keep up Park's 100 per cent start to the season. They go to CMB tomorrow.

GSK Ulverston Rangers' home game against Kendal County and Vickerstown’s Premier Division trip to Slyne with Hest were cancelled due to an accident on the A590 which led to huge traffic jams.

Rangers have the chance to claim their first points of the campaign – following an opening-day 3-0 loss at home to CMB – when they travel to Askam tomorrow. Vickerstown welcome Hurst Green.

Holker Old Boys managed to get through the traffic for their game at Carlisle City in North West Counties Division One North, but came back empty-handed after a late goal saw them lose 2-1. Nath McHugh had equalised for Holker.

Guy Heffernan's side host Ashton Town at Rakesmoor Lane tomorrow hoping to claim a first win of the new season.

Britannia continued their free-scoring form in the Riflemans Garage Furness Premier Division with an 8-2 win over Dalton United reserves.

Ross Walker (4), Dean Crossman, Sean Darby, Paul Dennison and Andy Whiteford all found the net for The Brit. Halowell scored two in vain for Dalton.

Vickerstown showed that the kids are all-right as their reserves, bolstered by the majority of last year's under-16s team, beat Barrow Celtic – who had netted eight on the opening day – 6-1.

Youngsters Max Green (4) and Tom Dawson found the net, while veteran Ian Rogers hammered one home.

Kirkby United started their season with a 5-1 victory over Haverigg United. Sam Pinnegor scored a hat-trick, with Paul Cleasby and Matty Bruce making up the five. Anthony Foster replied for Haverigg.

Holker reserves were another team playing their first game, and they defeated Swarthmoor 2-0. Troy Magee and Max Wiper were on target for the Rakesmoor Lane outfit.

Croftlands Park have two wins from two after a 4-2 success at Walney Island reserves. Matt Dean, Chris Waighte, Josh Bayliss and Zach Milby shared the goalscoring duties; Connor Carson and Jack Westall replied for Walney.

Millom reserves and Bootle shared the points following a 1-1 draw. Dave Harfoot scored for Millom and Graham Hartley found the net for Bootle.

Last season’s champions Hawcoat Park reserves picked up their first three points with a 5-3 win at the expense of Furness Cavaliers reserves. Carl Mackay (2), Carl Pearson, Lewis Turner and a rare Matty Haythorn goal made up the Hawcoat tally. Lee Simpson, Jordan Hughes and Haydn Chapman-Taylor were the Cavs marksmen.

Early joint-leaders Croftlands welcome Millom reserves to Cavendish Park tomorrow, while their fellow table-toppers Britannia are at home to Holker reserves.

There is another programme of midweek games on Tuesday and Wednesday, in the Furness Premier Division and the two top divisions in the West Lancs.

Furness Premier League Divisions One and Two kick-off next weekend.
