Cumbrian Archer Wills exits London 2012

ALAN Wills bowed out of the Olympics in agonising fashion after a one-arrow shoot-off defeat to Australian Taylor Worth.

Wills returned to Lord’s looking to make up for his team disappointment with success in the individual competition, but was beaten 6-5 by the 21-year-old from Western Australia.

The West Cumbrian builder found himself 5-3 down and needing to win the fifth set to take it to sudden death and he did that with three successive nines.

The format of the individual contest means that when matches are tied at five-all in the race to six both archers have one arrow to decide the victor.

West Australian Worth stepped up to the mark first and fired a 10, hitting the X in the middle of the gold. That put the pressure on Wills to do likewise, but he could only manage a nine and went out of the competition at the first round stage.

Worth faced American world number one Brady Ellison in the last 32.
