VICKERSTOWN Cricket Club put their 100 per cent league record on the line when they host Cleator A tomorrow.

The Rainey Park outfit have been in electric form this season, taking North Lancs Division Two by the scruff of the neck.

Their success has been put down to having a consistent team for selection and a marked improvement all-round by the players.

Captain Gareth Benson has been superb with the ball in the past two games, amassing 10 wickets.

In the last match, which saw them secure a comfortable eight-wicket win at Egremont, the seamer claimed 5 for 15, with his opening bowling partner George Scott returning with 3 for 25, while Daniel Williams weighed in with 2 for 4.

Despite their fine start to the season, Vickerstown know Cleator will be no pushovers, especially with dangerman Mark Ponticelli in their side, and they will be making an all-out effort to claim his wicket cheaply knowing the devastation he can produce with the bat.

Committeeman Peter Scott is expecting a cracking match against a West Cumbrian outfit which also includes Alan Wishart, and he said: “It will be a tough game against Cleator. They have a couple of really dangerous players.”

He said of Ponticelli: “He’s a batter who bowls, but when he comes in he goes for it.

“He doesn’t hang around he just plays his shots and if you are lucky you get him early on if not he gets a big score.”

However, Vickerstown also have some top performers, with Scott adding: “The opening bowlers George Scott and Gareth Benson have been taking wickets, the batting has been passed around a little bit but the main scorers this year have been Matt Roskell, Peter Lee and Craig Daly, and John Burns has been showing a bit of form lately.

“Anyone in the line-up on his day can score some runs, don’t rule out Dean Litherland or Benno himself getting some runs.

“The bowling has been a bit steadier this year and we’ve batted better.

“They have been doing well they have had a settled team as well, holiday’s haven’t struck yet.

“When people start disappearing on holiday, that’s when the depth will be found out.”

Although knocked out of the County and Marsden Cups early on, Scott is hoping for greater things from the team in the league.

He said: “Whether we can go the whole full hog is another matter, but time will tell.

“Hopefully we can keep winning and watch the other teams beat themselves.”

A-team captain Scott enjoyed success at Egremont last week as his side progressed into the next stage of the Vigodny Cup.

In the Premier Division tomorrow, Furness head to Whitehaven, a side who have yet to register their first league win of 2016. Meanwhile, Dalton head to the Lake District when they visit Keswick.

Division One has thrown up a potential cracker when Lindal Moor host near-neighbours Ulverston with Millom, heading up the coast to play Carlisle.

It is cup semi final day on Sunday, with Millom heading to Ulverston for the Sowerby Cup, while in the Vigodny Ulverston A entertain Windscale, with Furness A at home to Cockermouth A in the Marsden Cup.
