HIGSON Cup cricket returns to North Lancs And Cumbria League grounds on Sunday.

Dalton will have to be at their very best to overcome cup holders and defending Premier Division champions Workington.

Liam Curwen’s side have lost their opening two league matches to Cleator and Keswick, but have certainly not been overwhelmed, and if the likes of experienced paceman Jon Bell, batsman Jack Singleton and pro Madawa Warnapura perform, then who knows, there could be an upset at Ulverston Road.

There’s a cracking all-first division tie at Poolside where Haverigg take on Lindal Moor in what looks like being the battle of two Caribbean aces in the shape of Dalton Polius and Kenroy Peters.

While Polius has made a solid start to the season, Peters has began it in explosive style. After making a match-winning 110 at Millom on the opening day, the 35-year-old from St Vincent smashed his way into the league record books with an unbeaten 233 at Pennington Lane.

The double century – which came off just 112 balls and included 29 fours and ten sixes – helped Lindal pile up a North Lancs record total of 426 for 6 in their destruction of Peters’ former club Vickerstown.

Not bad for a player who is known more for his exploits with ball rather than bat.

With Poolside usually a good track to bat on, the Haverigg attack have been warned.

Millom face a testing trip to Premier Division newcomers Carlisle, and will look to dangerous all-rounder Graham Dawson and new professional Sameera Sadamal to lead from the front.

The Sri Lankan was an instant hit with 142 on his debut in Millom’s victory over Workington A last week, which bodes well for the rest of the season.

Premier Division action tomorrow sees Furness take on Cleator – a team they have had some monumental battles with down the years.

Scott Pearcey’s side have started the season well with their professional Seth Rance taking eleven wickets in two matches. But with the Kiwi joining up with the New Zealand squad for the ODI tri-series against Ireland and Banglasdesh, Furness will need their other bowlers to step up to the plate.

Dalton will look to kick-start their Premier Division season at home to Wigton – a win would give them a big lift ahead of that Higson Cup test against Workington.

In Division One, Lindal head to Seascale where Peters may find the short boundaries to his liking as Ed Waind’s men look to make it three from three.

Elsewhere, Millom and Ulverston go head to head at St George’s Road, and Vickerstown – no doubt licking their wounds after last week’s hammering at Lindal – will no doubt pick themselves up for the visit of Whitehaven.
