IT always used to be a clash of two local cricketing heavyweights.

But for Millom skipper Ian Swarbrick, Sunday’s trip to Furness in the County Cup semi-finals represents the chance to cause a big upset.

Times have changed, and the fortunes of two of the most successful clubs in North Lancs and Cumbria League history have differed greatly since the introduction of the Premier Division in 2000.

Millom’s last top-flight title came in 2005, and the St George’s side are now in the second tier, while Furness are hoping to chase down Workington and win their seventh Premier Division crown in the space of nine years.

But although Millom will go into the match at Furness Park as underdogs, Swarbrick is relishing the chance for his side to test themselves against quality opposition.

“It should be an interesting game,” said Swarbrick.

“We are quite looking forward to testing ourselves out against Furness who are the best team round here now.

“It should a good day, and we’ll see how we go.”

Millom are in with a good shout of winning promotion back to the Premier Division this year, and they have already reached the Sowerby Cup final, so they should not be written off.

Sri Lankan professional Sameera Sadamal has adapted well to English cricket, and with the likes of explosive all-rounder Graham Dawson among their ranks, they have the firepower needed to rock Furness.

Both Millom and Furness are looking to book their place in a second cup final this season.

While Millom will play neighbours Haverigg in the Sowerby Cup final, Scott Pearcey’s Furness will take on Cleator in the Higson showpiece.

As far as the Division One title race goes, Millom will have been buoyed by Vickerstown’s shock win over Lindal Moor last weekend, on a day when most of the league programme was decimated by the weather.

Lindal made 198 for 7 in 50 overs at Rainey Park, with a rain interruption leaving Vickerstown a revised victory target of 85 in 14 overs.

John Burns bludgeoned 55 not out and talented youngster Isaac Whitehall hit an unbeaten 23 as Gareth Benson’s side triumphed.

Millom entertain Seascale on Saturday, while Lindal go to Whitehaven and Vickerstown will aim to beat another of the promotion hopefuls, in the shape of Haverigg.

In the Northern League Barrow take on mid-table Blackpool at Ernest Pass, with Toby Mowat's side hoping to revitalize a once-promising campaign which has stalled.
