MILLOM CC aim to make it two Sowerby Cup final victories in the space of three seasons to honour one of their own.

Lying well off the pace in the North Lancs and Cumbria League Division One promotion race, the Sowerby Cup represents Millom first team's only chance of silverware this season.

And when the St George's Road side take on Workington A in Sunday's showpiece at Whitehaven, they will have extra special reason to put in a winning performance – as the knockout competition is named in memory of former Millom batsman Gareth Sowerby.

With the tournament contested solely by Division One clubs, Millom had never played in it before the 2014 season, when then skipper Ian Swarbrick led them to a resounding nine-wicket victory over Cockermouth A.

That final was also played at Whitehaven, so Millom's players and supporters will hope the omens are good for the team to get their hands on the trophy once again.

Victory is far from a foregone conclusion though, with Millom's league form having fallen below expectations at times this summer, and Workington A being tricky opponents.

But Millom do have proven match-winners in their camp and ones who have done it on the big occasion.

Star all-rounder Graham Dawson has been in good form with bat and ball of late. Paceman Paul O'Callaghan – cousin of Gareth Sowerby – is another dangerous performer and the likes of experienced batsman Michael Gill and talented youngster Jack Thompson could also have big roles to play.

Premier Division action tomorrow sees Dalton and Furness both hitting the road north – to Whitehaven and Wigton respectively.

In Division One, Lindal Moor need to beat Seascale at home and hope that Haverigg can upset leaders Carlisle at Poolside as the battle for promotion to the top-flight enters the final straight.

Millom warm up for their tilt at the Sowerby Cup with a trip to Kirkby's Community Centre, and Ulverston travel to cup Millom's final opponents Workington A.
