LINDAL Moor overcame a tricky start against Haverigg in the North Lancs and Cumbria League Division One, writes COLIN BICKERSTAFFE.

Batting first, the Moor lost wickets regularly on a pitch where run making wasn’t easy and were all out in the 34th over for 117, Edward Waind top scoring with 29 containing six 4s. Haverigg bowlers Dale Graham with for 25 and Jordan Postlethwaite for 36 in his 15 overs had put their side in a good position. After tea the visitors batting could not cope with the Moor’s attack, as Mark Daly bowled nine overs to take 7 for 14 and John Atkinson 3 for 13 in 8.1 overs to dismiss Haverigg for a meagre 32.

Put into bat Millom’s first five were out with 33 in total against visitors Ulverston. Skipper Mike Wilson again led a part recovery with 35, assisted by Ollie Pachul on 33 but the home team were all out for 142 in the 47th over. Paul Storey, 4 for 50 and Shane Lewis, 3 for 29 kept Ulverston on top. Ulverston also struggled with the bat and only an important 59 from Gareth Yates saw his side to the win at 144 for 8 in 43 overs. Millom’s Paul O’Callaghan returned 4 for 47 in 13 overs.

Put into bat, Seascale’s top four totalled 202 runs between them at Workington. Adam Brown was 74 not out with five sixes and five fours, Paul Knott made 55 including six fours , Robin Sparshott, 39, and Steve Brown jnr 34 giving good support. Seascale were 222 for 6 in their 50 overs. Workington veteran Paul McKeown taking 3 for 58 in his 15 overs. Workington made a bad start with the top five out for only 58. The middle order made a good recovery, Matthew Young making 51, Ryan Clubley, 49 not out, and Kieran Hull, 30, to get their side to 207 for 9 in 50 overs. Seascale’s Andrew Knott returned 5 for 42 in 11 overs.

Carlisle had first knock at Kirkby and with centuries from Alex Raybould, 104 not out, and skipper Marc Brown, 101 not out, were 294 for 4 at tea. Tom Marshall took all four wickets that fell for 51 in his 15 overs Kirkby had a poor day with the bat to be all out for 86, of which Mike Birkett made 39. Alex Calmy added six more wickets to what is already an impressive total of victims, returning 6 for 12 in 11.2 overs.

Meanwhile Furness edged an incredibly close match to maintain their pressure on league leaders Workington in the Premier Division.

In the tight tussle at Cleator, Furness had first knock and were grateful for Ryan Griffiths innings of 52 in an all out score of 177, Cleator veteran David Bell taking 4 for 21. In reply Cleator made a moderate start but a stand of 79 by Darren Clark and Rees Hughes edged the game slightly towards Cleator, but Clark unbeaten on 76 ran out of partners, and Cleator fell four runs short being 174 all out. Seth Rance 4 for 46 and Peter Lawson, 4 for 68, did a good containing job for Furness.

Winning the toss, Cockermouth batted first at Whitehaven. After losing a wicket in the second over, skipper Gareth White with 102, 16 fours and one six, and Matthew Sempill, 78, with 10 fours and one six, put on 100 for the second wicket, and when overs ran out, Cockermouth had 257 for 9 on the board. Habib Baloch took 4 for 48 in his 15 overs.

After tea Whitehaven were soon in trouble slumping to 26 for 5. Baloch made 34, but his side were all out in the 40th over for 145. Alex Grainger took 3 for 22 in seven overs.

Put into bat, a weakened Dalton made a poor start at Wigton losing three early wickets Jon Bell with 43 pulled his side round to some extent but the visitors could only put 120 all out on the board. Glen Liddle had a remarkable return taking 3 for 16 in his 15 overs including 11 maidens. Ben Purdham gave good support with 3 for 36 in 13 overs. Wigton went to a comfortable win with 121 for 3 in the 25th over, Theo Manihera top scored with an unbeaten 46.

Keswick were in first against leaders Workington and made 171 for 8 in their 50 overs. Workington extended their unbeaten run, making 174 for 4 wickets in 45.3 overs.

Batting first, Hawcoat Park lost both openers quickly at Dalton in Division Two. Callum Lucas with 40 and Sam Cunningham, 21, put on 67, but the last six wickets saw 93 for 4 become 100 all out. Dalton’s Mike Walker again bowled well to take 6 for 22 in 11.2 overs. Dalton’s reply saw them slump to 46 for 6, but an unbroken stand of 55 by Jordan Woodend, 38 not out and Tony Butler, 23 not out saw Dalton to the win at 101 for 6 in the 26th over. Hawcoat Park’s Callum Lucas took 4 for 35 in 11 overs.

Lindal Moor gave a commanding batting display at Cockermouth after being put in. Leading the way was opener Paul Clarke making 119, supported by Chris Brookshaw on 44, and Georgia Hendy and Chris Scrogham both getting into the 20s, and at tea the Moor were 253 for 4. Cockermouth’s reply was always behind the necessary run rate, and after 50 overs they were 168 for 7, opener Nick Mandale top scored with 28. Lindal Moor’s Thomas Gregg took 3 for 21 in his 15 overs with five maidens.

Vickerstown got back to winning ways against visitors Egremont. Batting first the Walneyites made 177 for 4 in their 50 overs, Matt Roskell with 64 not out and Isaac Whitehall, 48 not out, were top run makers. In reply Egremont were all out for 130, Sam Farrar making 59. Vickerstown’s George Scott took 4 for 25.

Furness at home to Cleator bowled the visitors all out for 91 in the 30th over. Furness went to a comfortable win making 92 without loss in the 17th over.
