SOMETHING has got to give at Pennington Lane tomorrow when Lindal Moor and Haverigg's winning starts to the season are put to the test.

Both sides began the North Lancs And Cumbria League Division One campaign like they meant business last weekend.

Lindal destroyed derby opponents Ulverston at Priory Road while Haverigg eased past Workington seconds.

Moor's victory saw star all-rounder Mark Daly in great form with bat and ball. He top-scored with 60 as the villagers made 224 for 9 before a devastating spell of swing bowling saw the former Furness man take a career-best nine for 15.

West Indian professional Dalton Polius enjoyed a great debut for Haverigg. He thrilled the Poolside crowd with a Caribbean masterclass, scoring an unbeaten 106 as Haverigg triumphed by 80 runs.

Both Lindal and Haverigg are determined to return to the Premier Division come the end of the summer, so it all adds up to a cracking spectacle in front of the new Pennington Lane pavilion tomorrow.

Lindal skipper Paul Wilcock was a delighted man having lost the toss and saw his team recover from a terrible start at the crease .

Wilcock, who scored 53 in a crucial partnership with Daly, said: "It was a good win after the skipper lost another toss. I think that's  seven on the bounce against Ulverston since I took over the captaincy!

"We did well to recover from 20-4 to post a good score. We bat right down the order so even losing early wickets I knew we could post a competitive total."

And on Daly's superb shift with the new ball - reportedly the best in Lindal's North Lancs League history - Wilcock added:  "He just bowls in good areas and swings it and is too good at times in our division."

Wilcock is expecting a very difficult match against Haverigg, but is determined to make it back-to-back wins as he realizes the importance of a strong start to the summer to boost their promotion hopes.

"The pro is obviously a decent player. Haverigg always get a good overseas players so it was no surprise to see them start well," he said.

"When Dalton won the league last year they won the first six or seven games and got on top and basically stayed there.

"So we will be looking to do something similar. We've had this group of players together for a while and are looking to push on this season."

Another team with aspirations of promotion to the Premier Division this year are Millom, and they also started the season well as they beat Carlisle by 17 runs at Edenside.

Ian Swarbrick hit a fine half-century and Graham Dawson showed his class with bat and ball (38 and 4 for 25) and they will look to lead the charge again when Ulverston visit St George's Road.

Kirkby were unfortunate not to chase down Seascale's 240 for 8 last week in a high-scoring opener on the west coast, and Mike Fugler's men would love to get up and running by toppling Carlisle at the Community Centre.

Scott Pearcey's reign as Furness captain got off to a great start with a 10-wicket demolyion of Whitehaven, but the reigning champions can expect a sterner examination tomorrow as they head to Clerator.

An under-strength Dalton experienced a tough Premier Division baptism, losing heavily at home to Keswick, and they will look to re-griouop and put in a better operformance at Wigton.

There are cup games on Sunday with Millom hosting Cleator in the Higson, and Furness, Haverigg, Vickerstown and Barrow all in County Cup action.

It's a real blast from the past at Rainey Park where Vickerstown of the North Lancs League Division Two lock horns with Northern League Division One big guns Barrow.

Toby Mowat's Barrow got their season up and running last weekend with victory at Preston and will be in upbeat mood as they head to Vernon Road to play bottom club St Annes.
