LIAM Livingstone is set to answer the call from Barrow to fill the void left by their departing professionals ahead of a big weekend for the club in the Northern League.

The 23-year-old has been making big strides on the county circuit for Lancashire this year, scoring 734 runs at an average of 56.46 in Division One of the Specsavers County Championship.

That includes 57 in the recent draw with Somerset at Old Trafford, but Livingstone will be returning to where it all began on Saturday and Sunday when Barrow face Kendal and Blackpool respectively.

“Liam Livingstone will be playing for us as our two overseas players both went back last week,” said Barrow captain Toby Mowat.

“He's a good lad and he knows where home is. It will probably be a walk in the park compared to what he is used to facing!

“It's not easy for him because there will be a lot of pressure on him as people expect him to just come in and score runs, but he's a good lad and it's great to have him as one of our professionals.

“Hopefully we'll be able to get some free gear off him as well!”

Livingstone's return is a timely boost ahead of tomorrow's home match with Kendal as the hosts are without several players due to family commitments.

Mowat's father Ray, who played Minor Counties cricket for Cumberland in his prime, may also temporarily come out of retirement to ensure Barrow are able to put out 11 players for the match.

“It's difficult for some of our players to play two games in one weekend because they have got families and other commitments,” said Mowat.

“It's a re-arranged league match and because the second team have already played their re-arranged match in the reverse fixture, we're not allowed to call on any of them.

“We'll still be able to get an 11 out though and we'll have a stronger team for the Blackpool game on Sunday.”

These are just some of the challenges Mowat has to face as team captain, although he is enjoying the extra responsibility the role has brought him after taking it on for the 2016 season.

Barrow are currently fourth in the Northern League going into these back-to-back matches and still in with a good chance of overhauling third-placed Fleetwood.

“I'm pretty satisfied with how it has gone,” said Mowat. “Parts of it have been good, but there are still one or two things to improve on.

“I didn't do so well at the start of the season because I put a lot of pressure on myself, but in the second half of the season I've been able to relax and concentrate on my batting.”

It is the final round of North Lancs and Cumbria League matches on Saturday - with one major issue still to be decided.

Carlisle have a five-point advantage over Lindal Moor at the top of the first division.

The North Cumbrians head to Ulverston while Lindal are at Workington A needing to win and hope that their neighbours from Priory Road do them a massive favour and beat Carlisle.
