HAVERIGG escaped the rain and boosted their North Lancs and Cumbria League promotion hopes with victory over Ulverston.

The Poolsiders edged to a one-wicket victory with just two balls left of their Division One home game – one of only a few matches to be played to completion on a rain-affected day.

Batting first, Ulverston were deeply indebted to Shane Lewis who was unbeaten on 56, and Stuart Cooper’s 43. No other player made double figures and the visitors were all out for 115. Dale Graham took 4 for 32.

Haverigg made a poor start, with the first five batsmen back in the shed with just 33 runs between them.

A good recovery was brought about by Anthony Foster and Graham, but when Foster went for 30 it was left to Graham and the tail to get the win, which they did with two balls to spare at 118 for 9.

Hero of the day Graham was unbeaten on 33, with Ulverston’s Paul Storey taking 4 for 23 in 13 overs.

Carlisle had first knock at Seascale and batted to good effect to put 247 for 8 on the board in 39 overs. Ben Davidson made 56, and Alex Raybould 53. Seascale’s Steve Brown, snr. took 4 for 78 in 13 overs.

Rain caused further overs to be lost, leaving Seascale needing 219 from 33 overs. An excellent innings from Adam Brown of 74, with six 4s and seven 6s, saw Seascale to 173 for 9. Alex Calmy was again among the wickets with 5 for 46.

Premier Division action saw Keswick win at Whitehaven after posting 240 for 4, mainly due to Glen Weightman’s 157, with 13 fours and 4 sixes. He was well supported by Geeth Kumara with 51.

In reply Whitehaven were always struggling and were dismissed for 113. Sam Barrett took 5 for 63 in 11 overs and Kumara 3 for 13 in 11 overs.

Wigton were 184 all out in the last over of their home game against Cleator. Angus Harman top scored with 59 and Mike Hollday hit 37. Cleator’s Dave Bell returned 4 for 25.

In reply Cleator went to the win at 187 for 5 in the 50th over. D Brown led the way with 73, with good support from James Rogers, 44, and Darren Clark, 35.

Hawcoat Park lost their Division Two match at Egremont by just two runs.

Egremont had to fight hard for runs and only a knock of 52 from Farrar got them to 122 all out at tea. Hawcoat’s Stanwix took 5 for 28. After tea it was the visitors’ turn to struggle for runs, and despite 60 from Stanwix they were all out for 120. Egremont’s Scott had a great return of 7 for 29.

In the Northern Premier League Barrow’s first and second teams both had to settle for losing draws.

The first team’s top-four Division One clash at Fleetwood saw Toby Mowat’s men hanging on at 155 for 9 after the home side had made 194 for 5 in a match reduced to 42 overs per side.

Stand-out performers for Barrow were Indian professional Kaustubh Pawar who was denied a century by just three runs, hitting nine 4s and two 6s in a brilliant innings of 97, well supported by Sam Dutton’s 34. Earlier Ryan Gilmour had claimed 2 for 42.

Sam Henderson and Paul Riley claimed three wickets apiece as Fleetwood A were bowled out for 143 at Ernest Pass, but Barrow seconds struggled to 71 for 7 in reply.
