THE big games are coming thick and fast for Furness CC in their quest for a trophy-laden summer.

Scott Pearcey’s side retained the South Cumbria Twenty20 Cup at the weekend with an emphatic finals day display at Pennington Lane.

After beating hosts Lindal Moor and then Millom to win the T20 prize, Furness have two cup finals to look forward in August as they look to lift both the Higson and County Cups.

Also on the Rams’ agenda is the small matter of trying to claw the North Lancs and Cumbria League Premier Division crown from Workington’s grasp.

Reigning champions Workington lead Furness by eight points going into tomorrow’s clash at Furness Park. Furness have already beaten Workington in the league away from home, and to travel West Cumbria again on the final day of the season for what could be a title crunch.

For that September 9 clash to have any bearing on the destination of the title, Pearcey’s men have to keep the pressure on, and victory tomorrow would be a massive boost.

Furness had a blip last month when they suffered their first defeats of the season on consecutive days to Cockermouth in the league and Ormskirk in the National Cup.

But since then they have steadied the ship, and Pearcey says his team are full of confidence and praised some of the club’s up-and-coming youngsters for the part they played in their T20 finals day success.

While first-team regulars Garry Thompson and Ryan Griffths took the plaudits with the bat, the performances of bowlers Luke Shaw and Cameron Baker were just as pleasing for Pearcey.

“We are going into Saturday’s game against Workington with lots of confidence after winning the T20 and getting into two cup finals,” he said.

“Sunday was a great occasion and it was good to see all the hard work paying off.

“Garry Thompson and Ryan Griffiths were a formidable opening partnership and set the tone in both the semi-final and the final.

“They were followed up brilliantly by Luke Shaw who bowled two great spells stepping up from the second team.

“A special mention goes out to Cameron Baker, who replaced Mark Daly in the final and bowled a fine spell.”

Pearcey is thankful to have a reliable bowling unit containing New Zealand international Seth Rance, experienced seamer Pete Lawson and left-arm spinner Jordan Buchanan at his disposal, and they have armoury to cause anyone trouble.

“Our bowling attack lead by Seth Rance is firing on all cylinders with Jordan Buchanan looking like he is back to his best,” he said.

“With Garry and Ryan going so well in the T20, I’m not sure what the batting order is going to be on Saturday as they will be champing at the bit to get back in.

“All the lads are coming into form at the right time and that should make for a great game.

“Hopefully we can get the win and push Workington all the way in the title race.”

Furness A are sniffing silverware this Sunday as they take on Egremont in the final of the Marsden Cup at Haverigg.
