SOUTH Cumbrian fans are in for a real treat this summer when a team of former international players show off their skills.

Dalton CC are preparing for one of the biggest days in the club’s history when the Lashings All-Stars roll into town in September.

The world-famous club – whose list of ex-players includes Sachin Tendulkar, Wasim Akram, Allan Donald and Sir Viv Richards – will grace Ulverston Road on Friday September 1 for a Twenty-20 match.

The occasion will provide a unique spectacle for local cricket, with many household names appearing for a team who tour the country every season taking part in fund-raisers.

To give a flavour of what might be on show at Dalton, the Lashings All-Stars XI who turned out against Plymouth CC this week included former England quartet Devon Malcolm, John Emburey, Chris Lewis and Martin Bicknell, as well as West Indian paceman Tino Best and South Africa’s Charl Willoughby.

Looking ahead to the day, Dalton opening bat Jack Singleton said: “No-one has really ever done anything like this before round here.

“Lashings have never been to the area, this will be the first game they have ever played in Cumbria.

“It’s too early to say who will be playing against Dalton, but Tino Best, Devon Malcolm and Monte Panesar all played for them last year and all the team are ex-internationals.

“They’ve got a squad of 30 players, and who plays on the day depends on who is available at the time.

“In the past they have had the likes of (Sachin) Tendulkar and (Muttiah) Muralitharan playing for them.”

The day’s events will begin with a junior coaching clinic led by Jake Woods of Cumbria Cricket, and will feature a Lashings-led session during the course of the morning, then this will be followed in the afternoon by the main event - the T20 clash.

For those fans wanting to make a real day of it, there will be a marquee, with corporate packages available, including a meal, auction, raffle and a meet and greet the Lashings players.

“It should be a great day,” added Singleton. “They tour the country playing different teams so we got in touch with them and had a meeting to discuss everything and then set things in motion, and it went from there.

“I have spoken to a few people I know through cricket circles from out of this area who have been to these Lashings days and they have said what a brilliant day it is.

“It will also help promote cricket in the area and be great to see all the stars in action.

“The younger ones might not know a few of the older Lashings players but it only take a minute to type their names into Google.

“And then for the older generation they might have only seen these players on television in the past.

“And even though they are not in the peak of their careers they are still going to be really good.

“They are undefeated in three years and that includes against some county teams so that shows you how good they are.”
