SCOTT Pearcey’s Furness face the biggest game of their season as they aim to peg back Workington in the North Lancs League title race.

Defending champions Furness head north tomorrow looking to avenge a rare home defeat at the hands of Workington earlier in the season, which allowed the West Cumbrians to build up a significant lead at the top of the Premier Division.

If Furness triumph they will be neck and neck again, while defeat would leave them with a mountain to climb as they look to claim a seventh championship success in eight years.

Workington are in the box seat with eight games to go and Furness know their best chance of overhauling them is to beat them on their own patch and feed off the momentum that will give them.

One man likely to have a big say in matters is Furness’ Kiwi professional Seth Rance whose 13 wickets last weekend led the Rams to a league win over Dalton and a County Cup quarter-final defeat of Barrow.

“They were two great results giving us real momentum going into the Workington game this weekend,” skipper Pearcey said this week.

Lindal Moor’s defeat at Carlisle means the men from Edenside are in the driving seat for the Division One title. But in what is a very competitive division – with the likes of Haverigg, Ulverston and Millom all dangerous opponents – the race for promotion is still very much alive.

Moor host Workington A, while Haverigg are at home to Kirkby, Millom go to Seascale, and Ulverston head to Edenside hoping to topple the leaders.

With the 2015 Marsden Cup final now out of the way, after Lindal Moor A beat Cockermouth in a game called off four times last summer, it’s time for the 2016 semi-finals to take place.

Cockermouth get another crack at reaching the final as they head to Furness, and Hawcoat Park host Egremont in the other tie.

Lindal A were thankful to Lee Stephens’ match-winning innings of 61 not out last Sunday as they survived a nail-biting finale to lift the trophy.

They get back to business in Division Two tomorrow with a trip to Hawcoat Park, while elsewhere leaders Vickerstown will look to bounce back just down the road at Furness Park.

The Rainey Park side’s colours were lowered for the first time last week when Dalton A – inspired by veteran Mike Walker’s miserly spell of 15 overs for 15 runs and Matt Holmes’s all-round effort of 2 for 33 and 62 not out – beat them by one wicket at Ulverston Road.

Gareth Benson’s side will look to get back to winning ways against Furness A, while Dalton head to Cleator aiming to continue that winning form.

Barrow head to Netherfield in Northern League Division One looking to keep in touch with the leading trio of Blackpool, Leyland and Fleetwood.

Toby Mowat’s men are in fourth – 24 points behind leaders Blackpool but with plenty of games left to sustain a title challenge. That mission begins at seventh-placed Netherfield.

l Furness past and present players beat last Friday’s wet weather to stage a very enjoyable charity match, with the proceeds of the day going to Jo’s Appeal. And it is now planned to be an annual event.

l Kids’ cricket coaching camps will be held at Vickerston CC over the summer holidays. The free sessions are open to boys and girls of all ages and will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10am, with the first one next Tuesday.

Equipment will be provided and no previous experience of the game is necessary. For more information contact Peter Scott on 07779 246384 or email lofftypete@gmail.com
