FURNESS pro Seth Rance showed the quality which earned him a New Zealand call-up this month by blowing away the Dalton batting line-up.

The Kiwi seamer took 8 for 26 as Furness maintained their unbeaten start to the North Lancs and Cumbria League Premier Division season with a comprehensive victory in the bank holiday derby at Furness Park.

The home side batted first, and with the in-form Nathan Waterston unbeaten on 80, they were 211 all out in the 37th over, with Dalton’s Tony Butler taking 5 for 85.

In reply Dalton could not cope with Rance as they were dismissed for 58 in the 21st over.

Put in to bat against Keswick, Workington opener Kristian Moffat scored a superb 128, containing 14 fours, as the reigning champions reached 269 for 7 in their 50 overs. Keswick pro Geeth Kumara took 3 for 48 in his 15 overs.

In reply Keswick never got going, and were all out in the 31st over for 77. Workington’s Matthew Lowden took 4 for 34 in 11 overs.

Cockermouth were in first against Cleator and steady batting saw them to 178 for 8 in 50 overs, Matthew Sempill, 45, and Gareth White, 39, being their main contributors. Cleator’s Davd Blackwell returned 4 for 43 in 14 overs.

The Cleator innings was dominated by Darren Clark with an unbeaten 103, containing 18 fours, and his side reached a winning 179 for 3 in the 46th over.

Carlisle had first knock against Wigton and would be grateful for the 67 from professional Justin Greaves as they struggled to 168 for 5 in 42 overs. After tea the Wigton top three put their side on track – Nico Watt, 61, Theo Manihera, 37 and Mike Slack, 32 – seeing them to a six-wicket win at 169 for 4.

Haverigg had first knock in their Division One derby at Millom and made a tidy start, but the remaining eight men made little impact on the score as they reached 149 for 9 in 47 overs, with West Indian pro Dalton Polius making 62. Millom’s Paul O’Callaghan had an impressive return with 7 for 47 in 14 overs.

With the recent big scores Millom have been amassing, a home win seemed on the cards. But the Haverigg attack soon knocked over the top order and it took an important 36 from Dan Mackie to get them back into the game.

But after his dismissal Millom again struggled, and it took the last pair to get them home at 150 for 9.

Fittingly O’Callaghan, after his great bowling spell, was there at the end. Polius, with 3 for 25 in his 15 overs, almost got the Poolsiders the win.

Having first knock against Workington seconds, Whitehaven collapsed after a good start. Their last six men only contributed 19 runs and the home side were all out for 159 in the 40th over. Opener Dom Chambers top scored with 52.

Workington veteran Paul McKeown returned 5 for 32 in 11 overs and Martin Turner 5 for 46 in 12.2 overs.

In reply Workington had a terrible start and never really recovered being all out for 110 in the 41st over, David Pearce getting 33. Whitehaven’s Stephen Holliday took 4 for 26 in 13 overs. Put into bat in their Division Two match against Cockermouth A, Cleator seconds lost an early wicket, but Steven Wishart, with 81, and Steven Lee, 31, put their side on top, and at tea the visitors were 208 for 6.

In reply only opener Stephen Chambers, who carried his bat for 47, gave Cleator problems and Cockermouth were 150 for 6 when overs ran out. David Glover did the most damage taking 4 for 30 in his 15 overs, to give his side a double-winning weekend.

In the third division, Egremont A had a poor afternoon against Whitehaven A, being all out for 90 in 32 overs.

Whitehaven’s Luke Blaney took 6 for 18 in seven overs. Whitehaven coasted to the win at 91 for 2 in the 23rd over, Ragharvendra Kurkal making 46 not out.

In the Northern League Barrow slumped to a nine-wicket defeat at Kendal, while the Ernest Pass second string beat Kendal A by two wickets, Jordan Nicholson taking 5 for 25 and Tom Penny hitting 47 not out.
