FURNESS and Cleator will contest this year’s Higson Cup final.

Familiar rivals down the years in the North Lancs And Cumbria League’s premier knockout competition, they won their semi-final clashes on Sunday. Furness overcame Keswick at Furness Park, while Cleator defeated Dalton in the west of the county.

Lindal A will play Egremont A in the Vigodny Cup final after they beat Whitehaven and Ulverston respectively.

Rain decimated Saturday’s North Lancs and Cumbria League programme.

Wigton decided to bat first against Furness, and soon lost three wickets to the accurate Kiwi pro Seth Rance.

They managed to recover thanks to 49 from Josh Dixon, Chadd Pearson, with 31 not out, and 24 from pro Mike Slack, but the visitors could only total 143 all out in the 47th over. Rance finished with 5 for 31 in 14.4 overs, but rain prevented the home club from batting and each side took four points.

Winning the toss and batting, Keswick made a great start at home to Dalton. Openers Andrew Bryson and James Mason put on 94, and when Bryson went for 30, Geeth Kumara joined Mason in a stand of 101, until Mason went for 90.

Kumara was out for 60 and when overs ran out Keswick were 249 for 7. Rain reduced Dalton to 26 overs and a new target of 171, but they were always behind the run rate and were all out for 95 in the 21st over.

Kumara returned 5 for 34 in 7.1 overs, and Dan Gaskell 4 for 46 in 10 overs.

Leaders Workington were in first against Cockermouth, and with an unbeaten 88 from their pro Gajasinghe, they made 173 for 4 in 41 overs when rain prevented any more play.

Cleator were 98 for 4 in their home game with Carlisle when rain stopped play.

Seascale batted first against Haverigg and found runs hard to come by and at the end of 50 overs – 23 of which were maidens – they had managed 102 for 8. Time lost to rain gave Haverigg 19 overs to make 56 and the target was reached in 8.4 overs, with Haverigg reaching 56 for 2.

Workington seconds won the toss and had first knock against Millom.

They never mastered the Millom attack and were all out in 40 overs for 117. Matthew Young top scored with 27.

Millom’s Robbie Wilson took 5 for 38 in his 15 overs and Billy Thompson 3 for 37 in 10 overs.

Millom made a comfortable start and were 32 without loss in eleven overs when rain stopped play, each side taking four points.

Vickerstown put Lindal Moor in and Moor made 198 for 7 in their 50 overs. Rain then caused a lengthy stoppage and when play resumed Vickerstown’s target was reduced to 85 from 14 overs, and they raced to 85 for 1 in 11.5 overs and a very welcome 10 points.

Whitehaven were in first against Ulverston, and mainly due to pro M Yasin’s 112 not out, put 206 for 5 on the board at tea. Rain prevented any further play, and each side received four points. A weakened nine-man Cleator seconds crumbled to 69 all out in their Division Two match against Kirkby, of which Mark Ponticelli made 57.

Mark Etchells took 3 for 15 in 7.4 overs. In reply Kirkby won in the 18th over, opener Paul Fugler making 39 not out. Furness A had first knock against Hawcoat Park and reached 195 for 7 at tea, Sam Hilton top scoring with 60.

Rain prevented any more play, with each side getting four points.

Cockermouth A were 175 for 4 in 40 overs when their match against Egremont was abandoned due to rain. Batting first in their Division Three match against Millom A, Egremont seconds made 182 for 1 in their 40 overs. Opener Ian Littleton was unbeaten on 117.

Rain caused overs to be lost and Millom were left with 11 overs to make 55, but they fell short at 43 for 2.

At Whitehaven Visitors Ulverston A, fielding only eight men, had first knock and were all out in the 30th over for 84. Gareth Mangham made 32, and Steve Rumney took 3 for 2.

Because of rain, Whitehaven were set to make 65 and won by seven wickets, reaching their target in the 20th over .

At Pennington Lane, Vickerstown A made 163 for 7 in their 40 overs. Lindal seconds were 66 without loss in 8.3 overs when rain caused the game to be abandoned.
