BARROW CC’s batsmen suffered a disheartening day all-round on the opening day of the Northern League season.

Both sides were bowled out in the 80s as they fell to heavy defeats against Fleetwood.

The Barrow first team could muster only 86 all out as they batted first at Ernest Pass in Division One.

Professional opener Kaustubh Pawar top-scored with 35, with only three other men reaching double figures and two out for ducks.

Sam Dutton made 15, Ryan Gilmour 14 and new captain Toby Mowat 11, but the total never looked enough.

The main men with the ball for the visitors were Adam Parker, who returned remarkable figures of four wickets for four runs from seven overs – including four maidens – and Travis Dean, with 3 for 38 from 11 overs.

Fleetwood reached their target inside 17 overs for the loss of only two wickets.

Dean was not out for 63 in a dominant innings as his team-mates batted around him.

At Fleetwood, the home second side totalled 232 for 5 as they batted first – Wayne Clarke top-scoring with 52, James Gregson making 40 and opener Joseph Davis 37.

Both Ciaran Dawes and Paul Riley took two wickets for Barrow, returning figures of 2 for 26 and 2 for 40 respectively.

Glen Kermode contributed 49 for the visitors in response, but there were seven ducks – including the last six wickets – as they were all out for just 85.
