SAM Dutton enjoyed a North Lancs and Cumbria League debut to remember as his century helped Furness to a comprehensive opening-day victory over Cockermouth.

Dutton hit 108 as Furness began their Premier Division campaign with a 268-run triumph. After an opening stand of 64 between Lewis Gribbin and Nathan Waterston (29), Dutton came in and set about the task with relish.

Gribbin offered good support, with 59, and Mark Daly marked his return to Furness with 46, as they ended on 325 for 5 in their 50 overs.

After tea, Furness needed only 12.4 overs to bowl the visitors out for just 57, opener Alex Grainger making 23.

Kiwi pro Seth Rance took 5 for 28 and Peter Lawson 4 for 25.

Reigning champions Workington had an impressive home win against visiting Wigton.

Batting first, the home side had amassed 292 for 4 at tea, Callum Moffat making 85, Robbie Lambert, 66, and Kaushalya Gajasinghe 63 not out.

In reply, Wigton struggled and were all out for 120 in 40 overs.

Newly-promoted Carlisle were at Keswick and, batting first, struggled for runs and would be disappointed to be all out for 115.

However, Keswick also found runs difficult to come by and were also all out for 115 in an exciting climax – meaning both teams took seven points in a tied game.

It was a low-scoring game at Cleator, where Dalton were the visitors.

The home team had first knock and were all out in the 38th over for 137. But Dalton also struggled and were all out for 54 in the 21st over, David Blackwell doing the damage with 7 for 40.

Haverigg were at Ulverston in Division One and made a steady start before slumping to 88 for 5.

An unbeaten 69 from Joseph Lovell and 31 from Robbie Evans saw the Villagers total 204 all out in 44 overs. Shane Lewis returned 3 for 50 in his 12 overs.

Ulverston would be unhappy with their reply as they lost wickets regularly and were all out for 62 in 33 overs. Skipper Ben Dryden top scored with 20.

Lee Postlethwaite took 3 for 2 in four overs and Connor Penrith 3 for 23 in seven overs.

Winning the toss, Millom, asked Lindal Moor to bat at St George’s Road.

It seemed a good decision as Moor lost their first four wickets for just 21. But batting at number five, West Indian professional Kenroy Peters changed all that as he smashed 11 fours and five sixes in his 110, and the visitors were 172 all out in the 44th over. Graham Dawson returned an excellent 5 for 30 in 12.4 overs.

Millom made a moderate start, and only Dawso’s 64 pushed them to 140 all out in the 35th over. Skipper Ed Waind, with 5 for 20, and Peters, with 4 for 38, saw the Moor to a comfortable win.

Put into bat at Seascale, Whitehaven made steady progress and were all out in the 48th over for 224. Mohammad Yasin top-scored with 63, with good support from Dom Chambers, with 40.

For Seascale, Danny Lee took 3 for 67 and Steve Brown 3 for 71 in their allotted 15 overs.

In reply, only opener Paul Knott, with 47, made runs in the top order, but number seven Danny Lee, with 64 not out, and number eight Steve Brown, 72 not out, saw Seascale to the win in the 47th over at 227 for 6. Habib Baloch took 3 for 48 in his 15 overs.

Vickerstown batted first at home to Workington A, and of the 173 for 9 they made in 50 overs, opener Sam Dixon was unbeaten on 107, with four fours and five sixes, a remarkable innings comprising 62 per cent of his team’s total.

Workington were always behind the rate. Only Ryan Clubley, batting at number eight, played a significant innings with 48, but his side were all out for 147. Vickerstown skipper Gareth Benson took 4 for 23 in 15 overs

In Division Two, Hawcoat Park, struggled to 138 all out in the 41st over against Egremont. The West Cumbrians also found runs hard to come by and were all out in the 41st over for 128. Hawcoat’s T Stanwix took 4 for 34.

Put into bat, Cockermouth A were soon in trouble against Furness A, with their top four back in the shed for 23 runs. Greg Barnes came to the rescue with 10 fours and a six in his 70 not out, but his side were 136 for 9 when overs ran out.

For Furness, George Smith took 4 for 45 in his 15 overs and new signing Tony Butler 3 for 30 in nine overs.

In reply, after losing two early wickets, Furness, with 38 from Wyll Stanway and 30 from Brad Chapples, went to the win in the 31st over at 137 for 7. Stephen Chambers took 3 for 29 in nine overs

Dalton A won the toss and batted first against Cleator A. After a steady start, theywere all out for 163 in 48 overs. Jacob Rigg top-scored with 47. Cleator veteran Alan Wishart took 6 for 31 in 13 overs.

In reply, Cleator’s top three batsmen were out with just 11 runs between them, but Mark Ponticelli put his side back on track with a vital 66 and David Glover (25 not out) saw Cleator home at 165 for 9 in the 42nd over. Dalton’s Matthew Bamber returned 4 for 39 in 13 overs.

Windscale batted first against Kirkby and were all out for 77, Mark Etchells taking 5 for 21 in five overs.

In reply, Kirkby opener James Thornton made 33, and a vital 20 not out from Mike Etchells took Kirkby to 78 for 7. Windscale’s Jamie Bickerdike took 4 for 36 in 6.4 overs

Division Three action saw Vickerstown A in first against Egremont A. They were indebted to opener Craig Pickering for his 78, containing 10 fours and two sixes, and 32 later down the order from D Brown, saw the Walney side to 153 for 7 in 40 overs.

In reply, Egremont opener, Matthew Hunter made 104 not out and saw his side to the win at 154 for 2 in the 24th over.

At Poolside, Haverigg A were in first against Ulverston A and made 165 for 4. Gav Chesher, with 66 not out, and skipper Roy Carton, 56, were the main contributors.

In reply, Ulverston were dismissed for 58. Anthony Johnson took 3 for 11 in 7 overs.

Millom A had first knock at Lindal Moor A. Opener Luke Ivison top-scored with 40 in a total of 95. Megan Smith took 4 for 15 in 8.5 overs.

Lindal Moor A scored 97 for 4 to secure the win in the 16th over, Chris Scrogham making an unbeaten 67. Millom’s Luke Gibson took 3 for 18 in 5 overs.

l In the Northern League, Barrow suffered a heavy defeat after a batting collapse at Blackpool.

Batting first, the home side amassed 258 for 3.

Barrow were going nicely, in reply, not losing their first wicket until the score had reached 77. There followed a collapse which saw them dismissed for 101.

Only openers Ryan Gilmour (39) and Toby Mowat (28) reached double figures.
