DALTON fell short in their quest to upset North Lancs League Premier Division leaders Cockermouth, losing by 33 runs after putting up a good fight at Ulverston Road, writes Colin Bickerstaffe.

Cockermouth decided to bat first and openers, Gareth White, 33, and Theo Valeri, 48, made a good start , but they then lost wickets.

Professional Chris Hodgson, with 51, and Matthew Sempill, 39, saw Cockermouth to 217 for 7 at tea. Dalton’s Johannes Diseko took 3 for 50 in his 15 overs.

Dalton’s top and middle order made steady progress, Jordan Woodend making 46, Diseko, 33, and Daniel Sharp, 31, but Valeri’s 6 for 46 gave Cockermouth the win, Dalton being all out for 184 in the 47th over.

Furness got back to winning ways with a five-wicket win at home to Keswick.

Keswick won the toss and decided to bat but both openers were soon out. However, Geeth Kumara, with 83, and Ben Sharp, 52, made a good recovery but five ducks in the middle and lower order saw Keswick all out for 167 in the 47th over. Furness pro Seth Rance took 4 for 35 in 12.2 overs.

In reply openers Ryan Griffiths, 63, and Mike Gadsden, 36, gave Furness a solid start, and they went to a comfortable win at 168 for 5 in the 38th over.

Whitehaven had a poor afternoon at Cleator. Batting first, they were all out for 128, of which Dave Watson made 39. Dave Bell returned an excellent 6 for 21.

Cleator’s reply was short and sweet, going to 131 without loss, Rob Mason making 67 not out, and Tom Sharpe, 55 not out.

Wigton were in first at Workington and had a moderate day with the bat to be all out for 108 in the last over. Workington’s pro Kaushalya Gajasinghe took 6 for 16 in 15 overs, and Matthew Lowden grabbed 4 for 30 in 13.3 overs. Workington were always in command with the bat and coasted to the win at 111 for 1 in the 27th over.

Robbie Lambert, 57, and Greg Platten, unbeaten on 52, batted well for Workington.

There were almost 450 runs scored at Seascale where Haverigg were the visitors in their Division One clash.

The home side were in first and with 58 from Jack Stubbings, were all out in the 46th over for 220. Haverigg’s Dale Graham taking 4 for 43.

Haverigg’s reply began badly but professional Dalton Polius, with 119 not out, and Dale Graham, with 56, saw the Poolsiders to a good win at 223 for 5.

A Lindal Moor side without star man Mark Daly had first knock at Millom and with 67 from skipper Paul Wilcock were all out for 167 in the 45th over. Jack Thompson jnr. took 3 for 20 in 7.1 overs.

In reply the Millom openers Danny Fallows with 52 that contained eleven boundaries, and Michael Gill with 30, gave their side a good start.

There was a bit of a stutter as wickets fell regularly and it was left to Danny Mackie with 32 to get Millom home at 168 for 7. For the Moor Edward Waind took 3 for 52 in his 15 overs.

At Edenside, Carlisle had first knock against Workington seconds and were given a good start by openers Ben Davidson, 53, and Paul Glascott, 24, but the next four batsmen made 11 between them.

However, Craig Manchester, 41, Alex Calmy, 56, and Tom Lydiate 28 not out, saw their side to 244 for 9 when overs ran out. Workington’s Oliver Wilson and Ben Scott each took three wickets.

After tea, Workington were demolished by Alex Raybould who took all ten wickets for 54 runs, including a hat-trick, to see the West Cumbrians to 108 all out.

A player shortage caused partly by football commitments gave Kirkby problems for their game at Ulverston, and batting first the eight-man villagers were 64 all out.

Mike Etchells made 33, and Ulverston’s Stuart Cooper took 3 for 10. Ulverston’s Jack Baxter made 27 not out as Ulverston made 66 for 2.

There were lots of runs at Cockermouth where the home side were in first against Furness A, and were 248 for 7 at tea in the Division Two match.

Greg Barnes, with 57, and Jack Edmondson, with 51, were the main contributors. Furness made a fight of it but were all out for 205. Agrawal top scored with 66 while Andrew Dodds took five wickets.

Vickerstown won the toss and batted at Hawcoat Park, and with 77 from Matt Roskell and Peter Lee’s 47, were 223 for 6 at tea.

Despite Callum Muncaster’s 64, Hawcoat Park were all out for 159 in reply, Vickerstown skipper, Gareth Benson taking 7 for 43.

Batting first at home to Dalton A Linda Moor A were all out for 179 in the 40th over, with club chairman Colin Knight batting at number eight making 52. Dalton’s Mike Walker took 4 for 23 in 7.3 overs.

In reply Dalton made a terrible start with the top six batsmen making 46 runs between them. The Dalton lower order made a good recovery but were all out for 143. The Moor’s Brad Marshall took 4 for 49 and Chris Moore 3 for 36.

Winning the toss Egremont batted first against Cleator A but had a poor day being dismissed for 100 in the 36th over.

Cleator’s David Glover took 6 for 57 in his 15 overs. After tea, Cleator also struggled for runs, but with 28 not out from Gary Hall they won in the 36th over with 104 for 7.

l There was double joy for Barrow in the Northern League, with both first and seconds teams beating Lancaster.

Toby Mowat’s first XI have moved into the top five in Division One after a resounding 93-run victory at Ernest Pass.

Indian professional Kaustubh Pawar laid the foundations for the win with a brilliant innings of 125 as the home side made 265 for 9.

Pawar’s Mumbai team-mate Javed Khan then took 4 for 44 and spinner Gary Collins 3 for 32 as the visitors were dismissed for 172.

Guy Heffernan scored 48 and Robin Adams 39 not out as Barrow A rattled up 219 for 6 against Lancaster A. The hosts were skittled for 147, with Paul Riley (4 for 50) and Sam Henderson (3 for 29) doing most of the damage.
