BARROW'S Liam Livingstone played a starring role with bat and ball as Lancashire secured runners-up spot in the County Championship.

Livingstone claimed a career-best six-wicket haul and then hit an unbeaten 69 as the Red Rose county beat Surrey by seven wickets in their final Division One match of the season.

The 24-year-old – a promising leg spinner in his younger days at Barrow before becoming more of a batsman and occasional bowler – showed he can still do a great job with a match-winning effort in Surrey's second innings.

Livingstone's 18-over spell of produced figures of 6 for 52 as the visitors were dismissed for 242, leaving Lancashire needing 176 to win to secure second place behind champions Essex.

Lancashire resumed on 132-3 today and Livingstone and Shiv Chanderpaul saw them quickly to their target. Livingstone hit a six at the start of the final over, and Chanderpaul (43 not out) ended the game by hitting two sixes and a four.

Livingstone's six off Scott Borthwick, his second of his innings to go with eight fours, took him past 800 Championship runs for the season. But it was 43-year-old Chanderpaul who finished things off as Borthwick's 11 balls cost him 35 runs.

Livingstone is forging a great career as an attacking batsman and his excellent form for Lancashire saw him picked for England in their T20 series against South Africa earlier this summer. His highest First-Class score saw him hit 224 against Warwickshire last month.
