BARROW started their Northern League season with a strong showing to take a winning draw at Morecambe.

With new recruits Jamie Pinfold and Aaron Keverne Onyon in their line-up after arriving from the Southern Hemisphere earlier in the week, the visitors put in a sound display at Woodhill Lane.

Batting first, Barrow made 227 for 6 from their 50 overs, with Australian all-rounder Onyon top-scoring with 63 after coming in at number five.

Openers Dean Williams (52) and captain Toby Mowat (23) gave them a strong foundation to build on, with Adam Hunter also contributing with 24 not out. Pinfold was dismissed for 13 on his debut.

Adam Derham returned figures of 3 for 42 from 10 overs with the ball for the home side.

In response, Morecambe never looked like threatening their target, with Mowat showing off his bowling skills as he took 5 for 20 from seven overs to rip out the heart of the hosts' top-order.

Daryl Wearing – hoping to reach 500 wickets for the club this season – claimed the other scalp, dismissing opener Viraj Bhati for nine.

Barrow would have fancied their chances of taking the win outright as the top sic contributed just 48 runs between then, but a hard-fought partnership between Edward Read (32 not out) and Tommy Clough (50 not out) meant they had to settle for 10 points instead.

There was defeat for Barrow A in Division Two, as Morecambe A claimed a straightforward six-wicket triumph at Ernest Pass.

Batting first, the home side could muster just 100 all out, with only Robin Adams (33) and Ciaran Dawes (29) reaching double-figures.

Jack Lupton was the tormentor-in-chief, claiming five wickets, with Izhar Ullah taking three and Irfan Qayyum two.

There was a positive start for the home side with the ball, as they had Morecambe 41 for 4, Paul Bayman claiming two wickets and Jordan Nicholson and Ben Carr one-apiece.

But skipper Andy Bird (21 not out) and Sean Graves (32 not out) made sure there were no more wobbles as they saw the visitors home with 22 overs and six wickets to spare.
