LIAM Livingstone has been tipped to star for England on the international stage by an Ashes-winning captain.

Michael Vaughan, who led his country to victory over Australia in 2005, picked out the Barrow CC product for success after an impressive display for Lancashire against Yorkshire.

Livingstone top-scored with 55 off just 23 balls – reaching his half-century in a Lancashire record 22 balls with a huge six – to help his county win the Roses Twenty20 match at Old Trafford.

His display, which included six fours and four sixes saw him named man-of-the-match as Lancashire totalled 204 for 7 to beat their rivals by 26 runs on Friday night.

Vaughan, a former Yorkshire player, was impressed with what he saw from the 22-year-old, who has also made a strong start to his first-class career with the Red Rose county, scoring two 50s and a hundred so far this season in the County Championship.

Writing on Twitter, Vaughan said: “Think we are witnessing a future England star in Liam Livingstone.... #NoBrainer.”

Speaking to Lancashire's official website after his display, Livingstone said: “It’s always good fun in the Roses matches at Old Trafford, especially when it’s packed out and nice to put on a good performance for the fans.

“We turned up tonight, and put on a good performance against the Yorkies.

“We usually try to bat first, put on a score and then squeeze with our spinners, and I thought our spinners bowled really well today.”

Livingstone, who had no idea he had broken the Lancashire record for the fastest 50 until told about it by the media later, added: “I loved it. It’s pretty easy when you slide under the radar with the likes of Guppy (Martin Guptill) and Jos (Buttler) in the side so it’s a free role for me really. You can go out and play with a bit of freedom.

“It was a very good wicket and the ball sat up quite nicely so I swung through the line of a few and got hold of a few. It was good fun.”

Livingstone featured for Lancashire in their Twenty20 loss at Nottinghamshire on Saturday, making just nine as the side fell to a two-wicket loss after being penalised for a slow over rate. He also scored 21 in their Royal London One-Day Cup match against Warwickshire yesterday.
