BARROW CC can put themselves in the driving seat for a top-three Northern League finish if they enjoy a productive weekend against two of their main rivals.

Toby Mowat’s side lie fourth in Division One ahead of tomorrow’s home game against Leyland – the team two points and one position above them in the standings.

Victory for Barrow would give them the edge over Leyland as the season heads to its climax.

Although far from being mathematically impossible, Barrow’s chances of catching long-time leaders Blackpool are slim.

But Mowat’s side will get their chance to test themselves against the front-runners on Sunday in the second installment of a tough double-header weekend.

Two wins out of two and Barrow will be within striking distance of second-placed Fleetwood, and a top-three finish would be very much on the cards.

Furness’s hopes of pegging back Workington in the North Lancs and Cumbria League Premier Division are hanging by a thread.

The West Cumbrians are unbeaten in 16 league matches – including home and away wins over Furness – and have one hand on a dream league and Higson Cup double.

All Furness can do is keep winning – they entertain mid-table Keswick tomorrow – and hope Workington suffer an unlikely collapse.

Workington host Wigton tomorrow, fresh from an emphatic 161-run Higson Cup final demolition of first division promotion contenders Lindal Moor.

Lindal must dust themselves down and go again as they are still hoping to overtake Carlisle at the top of Division One. Moor face a difficult trip to Millom next up, while Carlisle are at home to Workington seconds.

Millom showed what a dangerous outfit they are last weekend when sharing the points in a riveting tied game against the league leaders at Edenside.

It was a great individual day for one-time Cumberland Minor Counties player Graham Dawson.

He took 5 for 62 as Carlisle made 228 for 9 and then smashed 91 as the visitors equalled their hosts’ total.

Elsewhere third-placed Haverigg head north to Seascale and Ulverston and Kirkby lock horns at Priory Road.

Victory for Vickerstown in their first versus second home game against Egremont in Division Two will put the icing on the cake of a title winning season.

Sunday cup action sees Hawcoat Park taking on Egremont in the Marsden Cup semi-final.
