BARROW host county rivals Penrith tomorrow aiming to consolidate their top-three Northern League standing.

The Ernest Pass side have never won the Division One title – although they came mighty close in 2013 – and they are well in contention this year after a great start to Toby Mowat’s reign as captain.

Mowat’s men lie 15 points behind leaders Leyland following a five-wicket win over Kendal last weekend – a victory set up by Barrow’s reliable bowling unit.

Seamers Javed Khan and Daryl Wearing and spinner Gary Collins all claimed three wickets as the home side were skittled for 99.

Cumberland’s Sam Dutton top-scored with 34, and 31 not out from Michael Wellings helped Barrow to a comfortable five-wicket triumph to keep them in the thick of it, and they will be confident of disposing of second-from-bottom Penrith.

The two sides will be very familiar to each other by Saturday evening as they play a Twenty20 Cup match at Penrith tonight, and hopefully Barrow will be celebrating a double success.

Furness will look to keep the pressure on unbeaten leaders Workington at the top of the North Lancs and Cumbria League Premier Division.

Workington have won all nine so far, including a recent victory at Furness Park, but Scott Pearcey’s men have managed to hang on to their coat-tails with some impressive results of their own.

Pro Seth Rance took 6 for 49 in last weekend’s victory over Whitehaven, and the Kiwi and his team-mates will need to be on form again against Wigton.

The North Cumbrians knocked the Rams out of the Higson Cup in May and also got to within one run of them in their Premier Division game in the north of the county.

There is a big match taking place at Ulverston Road as Dalton will aim to increase the gap between themselves and bottom club Whitehaven, and in doing so push themselves further into the mid-table mix.

Division One leaders Lindal piled on the runs last week in beating Ulverston – led by all-rounder Ed Waind’s 96 – and they can consolidate top spot by beating Seascale.

Haverigg and Millom are both still very much in the title picture in third and fourth positions. The Poolsiders head to second-placed Carlisle and Millom host Kirkby.

Both Haverigg and Millom have one eye on the Sowerby Cup final on Sunday, with Haverigg hosting Workington A and Millom heading to Ulverston in the last four, while Furness A take on Cockermouth seconds in the Vigodny Cup semi-finals.

Vickerstown are looking invincible in Division Two as they put their 100 per cent record to the test against Lindal Moor A.
