AN ankle injury has ended Liam Livingstone’s tour of the West Indies with England Lions – with a fitness test needed to decide if he will make it for England’s Test series against New Zealand.

The Barrow batsman has been in the Caribbean for the Lions’ three-match Test series against West Indies A, the final game of which starts in Antigua on Monday.

However, the Lancashire captain suffered an injury to his left ankle in training, and as a result will miss that match in order to return home for assessment and treatment.

Livingstone, like many of his team-mates, had a tough time with the bat in the first two Tests in Jamaica. He scored 21 and one as the first match ended in a narrow defeat – taking two wickets with the ball, as he did also in the second match.

Batting in that second Test, he was out for a duck in the first innings, before top-scoring with 48 in the second as they fell to an innings defeat.

Livingstone was using the West Indies tour as a warm-up for his first call-up to the England Test squad, for a two-match series in New Zealand next month.

It is hope the ankle problem will not prevent him from travelling to the Southern Hemisphere for the series, but as assessment on that will be made a later date.

A statement on the Lancashire website said: “At this stage the injury is not thought to be serious, and a decision on his fitness to tour New Zealand with England will be made in due course.”
